I keep thinking that, perhaps, one day I'd like to own a cat.  Something small and little that can mostly look after itself.

The road can get lonely.

And we actually have a lot of PBR boxes laying around.  According to Youtube, cats love to push themselves into boxes.

They can be calming creatures, too. I'm sure you could attract a small stray using one of the boxes.

[Maybe he wanted a cat after seeing some of the videos she had sent him.]

They seem to mostly attract trash.

...and ants.

Maybe we can find a clean box then. [She hopes you're referring to boxes anyways.] Don't worry, if you want a feline companion, I'm certain there's a way.

[JC seemed to like strays enough with a camp full of them, so he'd probably like to take in a feline stray as well.]

[The usual way would be to go to a shelter and pick up a cat. Trouble was, without a permanent address and, lately, being on a few Most Wanted lists, he wasn't exactly going to get audited by the humane society as having proper credentials for cat ownership.]

Yeah?

[Sometimes he's such a child.]

Andrew's backpack smells like fish. That might work.

[None of them had a real address, living in tents and moving about, so no one in the group could pick out a cat from the shelter.]

I think it would. Boxes, bags - cats like things to hide in. [If she could get her hands on catnip, she would put some in Judas' bag to peeve him so.]

[Now. Jesus doesn't read thoughts. But he doesn't have to either. He doesn't know why Judas and Mary hold such animosity towards each other. He really doesn't.]

I wonder if I couldn't go on Craigslist and see if a cat needed a new home... It would be easier than trying to catch one.

[Mary knows why, but she won't say it because she doesn't care much for Judas with how he speaks to her.]

Since when have things ever been so easy? [She gives him a bit of a pointed look with a tilt of the head.]

Who says that they have to be so hard?

[He takes her hand because he's that sort of guy.]

People assume that anything good must come at great cost. It doesn't. Look at what Judas can do by rubbing some pennies together!

Seems to be all Judas can do right. [Mary gives his hand a small squeeze, the humor there in her eyes. She can respect Judas, but that's really all she'll do. JC was the only link they seemed to have in common.]

Go find a feline companion on Craigslist then. If you can't, we'll look around the city for one as an alternate solution.

[Forgive the sigh. The fighting gets to him. He's a pacifist after all. Even with his temper.]

I wonder where Matthew left his MacBook.

[She reaches in her bag and pulls out her phone.] Try this for now. The screen isn't as big as the laptop's, but easy to look through the listings.

[Mary unlocks it and opens the browser before holding it out to him.]

[Forgive him. He's so bad at this. He even sticks out his tongue as he tries to get the phone browser to behave. It doesn't. He ends up on men seeking women, romance. Complete with pictures.]

[She gives him his chance to do it for himself, but when she checks on what he's found, Mary has to hold in her laughter. She reaches and plucks the phone from his hands.] Let me.

[Poor JC. Her fingers fly over the device, and then hands it back. This time it's definitely Craigslist and cats available for adoption in the area.] I believe this is the companionship you're looking for.

[He's had too much to do to learn how to properly use technology! That's what he has Matt and Andy for! He doesn't own a mobile, not even a prepaid one. He has no one to call but his mum and his step-dad and he does that by pay phone every once in awhile, calling collect or with a few pounds he can get off of Judas.]

Let's see... Black cat, six years old...oh, she looks sweet!

[First cat on the list and he's sold.]

[Ah, so that's why you keep them around.]

You should look through the whole first page first before you make a decision. [She peers over his shoulder and then points to a calico one.] What of this one?

[Mary ought to realize her mistake in 3...2...]

[Oops.]

You can't take in all the strays on the page, and you know the supplies for them will add up.

[Judas might reign in his temper for spending on one kitty, but two? Mm.] Don't you have enough strays with you here in the desert?

[She smiles at him.]

[Okay. She has a point. It wouldn't be fair to the cats or the Twelve to adopt them all.]

Which one then? How do you pick?

[he knew how to pick his group because there was a spark in them. Something remarkable.]

[She's got good ideas if people would just listen to her.]

Well, you can see if any are sick, or need extra care. You can start with that to help you decide, such as if you can spare the extra piece or so for medicines along with the food for it.

Don't think Judas would let me use money for cat medicine when it should be spent on people.

[And that was fair. So he scrolls through photos and sad stories about pet adoption instead.]

There's a little black one whose owner's child developed an allergy...

[Mary looks at the choice JC is talking about, and uses her finger to scroll through the information.]

I think it's cute. And you'd be doing a good thing for its owners while helping the kitty, too.

[Two birds with one stone, and everybody would be happy!]

Now to slip away before Judas finds out and tries to stop me. Do you want to come?

He'll probably think we're off to do something else. [Given her profession and all.] And yes, of course I'd love to come.

What's the address on it?

Well that wouldn't be so bad. I don't need to check with anyone.

[Zoom! Over his head!]

It's close. Just two miles or so.

Two miles? We've walked further before. [Mary reaches down to take his hand and leans up against him. With that pose, someone wouldn't think they were off to go pick up a kitty.]
