So this is the new headquarters. Snazzy. Don't get me wrong, Chief, there wasn't anything wrong with the old headquarters. Well. Before.

Anyway, my point is, thanks for picking me out of all your agents to get your party started. Am I right?

Not - that - this is a party. These missions are serious business. It was just a figure of speech. You know that, as an agent, I've trained myself to desire absolutely no fun on the job.

I'm not really sure I understand it, either, but it's all part of this game that some friends and I are playing. It's an alternate reality game, and, if you die while playing the game and you're laying on a thing called a quest bed, then you come back to life and ascend to the god tiers, which are really, really high levels in the game. It makes you really really powerful!

Oh! Okay. So it is a tabletop game. Or. One of those RPG things. With really freakin' awesome technology.

Well, it's not really a tabletop game, but it is some pretty amazing technology!

... I don't actually know. But I bet it was somebody really, really strong. Strong enough to create a universe!

And, I mean, I'm sure it wasn't just one person. Game developers have whole teams dedicated to worldbuilding. I think.

Nope! It's really real. Not even just pretend-real. I could probably show you, but I'm not sure I'd be able to get us back here afterwards.

Okay, well, I guess the easy answer is "it's a movie," but the real answer is "peop-"

Oh, they're real! They came with my new powers when I got to the god tiers, because my dreamself had them. And, when I died, I ascended in her body.

Okay, wait.

So are you saying that if I play this game, and I decide that my dreamself avatar player thing has, like, Justin Bieber hair, and I die in-game, I'll use my next life having Justin Bieber hair?

Well, I didn't really decide it, but I guess that's how it works, kind of! Because, when you die and are reborn into the god tiers, your mind and memories go into your dreamself's body. Which actually kind of makes sense-- because, if your waking body is dead, you can't use it anymore.

What about your items and stuff? Or do you have to go and gather all of them again? Because that is the worst back when I playvideo games and die and all my items just disappear. Or worse, when it sends be back to the beginning of the level.

No, all of the things that you were carrying stay with your body. I guess you could go and get them, but I don't even really know where mine is!

I'm surprised no one's come up with a hack for that.

I know a couple guys who probably could, though, if anyone else wants it.

Um! I don't think you can hack this game. And, even if you could, it would probably be really, really dangerous!

Ah, you're probably right. I mean, with all the hi-tech dog ears flying stuff, the developers probably anticipated it.

[yes. yes, he does see all of them - the stars and the other kids and the green sun and why does that remind him of a dr. seuss book? he takes it surprisingly well. at least - for a second. standing there calmly.

until something snaps and he starts to freak out.]
