Tony is ever so thrilled about this AU. Really!

You actually did it. The running gag. The dumb joke among people already way below me in IQ, the fandom cliche that actually doesn't seem to be done enough to be a cliche, and you threw in a Twilight joke right in the username. And I can't drink alcohol anymore so I can't just get face deep in vodka unless this isn't a thing anymore.

But you know what? You don't have to be a genius - and I've seen your grades, you aren't - to know this won't go anywhere. Go ahead and post to all the memes you want. Tag people. See if you get any responses. The thing about trying to make a joke into an actual character is that nobody is interested but the people in on the joke, and none of them RP.

...or at least I hope so. Because if I have to seriously endure the ridicule from the entire team, renewed tension with Steve and more rockiness in my relationship with Pepper? I will get into your head and make your relive failing your Biology final every night you sleep from now until you delete this account.

Bruce would be a good person to ask for help. But I have the feeling you're not going to need to keep the lab Tony-proof for long. Is everything you do in the suit that's precision controlled by JARVIS or are you the one that controls the motion? [It probably isn't the same, but putting it in the context of the armor might give Tony the frame of reference he needs to start adapting.] He'll probably be able to help with the changes too.

Theory and reality don't always match up the way we hope. And not everyone would see how wrong it'd be to leave someone in that condition. [There were a lot of people who would enjoy having that power.] Seeing weakness and not exploiting it... that's a valuable strength, Tony.

You just explained it to me. I'm not planning on trying to behead you or lock you up. I can't be the only person who would be okay with this. I'm a senior citizen, remember? I should be trying to find a pitchfork not suggest finding someone to help with your food allergies. There should be someone you're close to that would let you bite them.

[Even with the teasing, Steve is serious. He can't believe that no one would help Tony if it's the only option to keep someone from figuring out what's going on or Tony starving because he can't get blood.]

It's good to know I'm not going to end disappearing because vampires like fast food. But I'm not sure if kidnapping me would cause that much impact now. Captain America isn't a contemporary symbol. I'm a relic, Tony. Wouldn't be that hard for SHIELD to put another hero in my place to catch the public eye if I did disappear.

If they're making you uneasy, then go with your instincts. You were were right about Fury. If you think something's going on, it probably is.

But you're not going to end up like that. You'd never leave someone in an alley. No matter how long you live, you won't not care. And if you start to get that way, I'll drag you back before you cross the line.

The suit is hard to explain. Part of it is me, but part of it has always been JARVIS auto-correcting things if they're off. He's taken this in stride with only a few remarks - Jarv is a good friend, you know? I haven't broken the news to Bruce, yet, though. One person at a time.

It's the one blood type only thing. See, there's different kinds of vampires and I got stuck with the kind that only feeds on one particular blood type. So while there's a lot of good people out there, having to block out all the A, B, and AB options right off of the bat narrows it down a lot. Truthfully, though, I'm kind of glad I can't bite Pepper. After everything she's put up with, it wouldn't be fair to ask her to take this on, too. This is going to take some finessing before it works.

You're still an Avenger and a superhero. That puts you way up on the no-touch list. The current Camarilla Princess of New York is a concentration camp survivor, too, so you're pretty high up on her list of people who are explicitly not to be touched. She's paranoid as Hell and the rest of the Camarilla are arguably worse, but I can't really dislike her as person given what she went through. As someone with the power to be judge, jury and executioner over all vampires in the state, she scares the shit out of me.

Hard not to worry about that kind of thing when I see so many people just go crazy after one century too many. Steve, I - [Tony hates that he is about to say this, and hates feeling it more] I'm scared. Fuck, did I really just say that? Ugh.

But you still had to learn even if JARVIS takes control sometimes. It all takes time and it'll get better. Wanting to get that back - wanting a piece of your old life - is a good motivator. JARVIS is one of the best beings I've met since I was found. He'll help you. So will Bruce once he's over the initial shock.

Is Pepper okay with all of this? It has to be a lot for her to take in.

[After the suggestion about being the 'ideal food source' it doesn't really surprise him when Tony mentions which blood types aren't compatible.]

So you need to find someone with type O blood that isn't going to panic when you need to bite them?

[For a few seconds he can only stare as he considers the idea of the 'Princess' of New York might have been in one of the camps.]

I would have thought someone leading a group of vampires would be older. I went to some of the camps. I could've met her...

[Which in its own way is the weirdest part of this conversation.]

If you didn't worry - weren't afraid - you wouldn't be human. If you still have that fear, then you know you have to do the right thing. And I don't plan on leaving any time soon so you'll have me and my old fashioned morals around keeping you in line.

I haven't told Pepper yet. My mun dragged me here and there's no Pepper here, at least not one that I've found who I can talk to, and so I'm still waiting to see how that goes. It's kind of terrifying. I'm the same guy I was before, but I can see why she might want to back off after this comes out.

Most vampires can take all kinds of blood. I got stuck with the clan that can't. But I'm also in one of the clans that has the least likelihood of going into any kind of frenzy. Take the good with the bad, there.

[Tony nods; the thing is, Steve's not wrong. Most Camarilla leaders are much older, from what he's been able to gather.] She's an anomaly. But she's one of the most powerful Tremere vampires anyone's ever seen. Tremere can use magic, and normally it warps their mind at least a little. Enough no one in the Camarilla takes them into the power structure. But Ilse had already been through so much in the camp she was in that magic and vampirism weren't enough to hurt her, apparently. I'm kind of convinced they put her in power so they wouldn't have to see what she'd do if she decided not to play by their rules. But she looks like she's in her mid-twenties, so... yeah. You could've met Ilse in some German concentration camp. She'd have been a little younger than that at the time, maybe a teenager... anyway, she didn't indicate she knew you personally when she explain the rules of the Camarilla to me, just that you were off limits.

[Tony smiles at him - really smiles at him, for the first time since the vampire thing started.] Thanks. For being your usual overly optimistic self. Yeah, it can be grating, but - sometimes, it's needed. I need it. It's too bad neither of us can drink anymore or I'd buy you a round.

Pepper doesn't show up here often, but I've seen her on memes. It'll be a shock when you finally can tell her, but she's dealt with everything else with the super hero life. She'll be able to accept this too.

Picky eating sounds easier to deal with than going into a frenzy. [Which is something Steve would rather not see, especially with someone who is a friend.]

I might have met Ilse. There were so many people. I remember a lot about those days but some of it... [Even with his memory, some of it had thankfully blurred over time.] Even if I had met her, she might not ever mention it. Surviving something like that, then add that kind of power, it probably is best that she has that position.

[Rubbing the bakc of his neck, he smiles wryly.] I'm not overly optimistic when it's for my friends. It's fact. I know it won't happen to you.

I can drink. I just can't get drunk. [And Tony can drink, just not what's normally found in bars. Which makes things a bit awkward when he considers how difficult it has to be for Tony to find the right blood.]

If what you need is type O, then there is a possibility if you need it.

I'm not sure I should tell her. She's had to take so much, Steve. She's been through too much. I feel like I'm wrecking her life at this point.

There are some clans that are notorious for going into frenzies. That's why there's sort of classism in the vampire world - it's like racism except based on clans. I lucked out, I guess.

Ilse actually didn't luck out. She got stuck with one of the universally reviled clans, but she's just so focused that she makes it work. I'm really lucky I'm under her jurisdiction. But it also means that I won't be able to devote all my time to the Avengers - she wants me to work on tech that will help vampires pass for human. She's convinced that if people knew about vampires it'd be, well, WW2 all over again. And she might not be wrong, there. Which is why I'm surprised that people seem to be taking this okay so far.

[He had been quite frankly spooked by some of the stories he'd heard from the others he'd met. Families, friends, spouses - anyone could stop viewing someone as a person when they were turned. Tony's sure they're not going to try and behead him, but he'd understand if the team kept their distance.] Yeah, well. There's allegedly a way to get vampires drunk, but around the part involving gasoline I decided not to investigate it too much.

I can't feed off of Bruce. He's type O, but with the Hulk thing... let's not and say we did.

It's better that she finds out now than becomes suspicious that something else is going on. Vampire isn't going to be her first assumption if she thinks there's problems in the relationship.

It sounds like you did get lucky. We'd figure something out if that could possibly happen but I'm glad it's something we don't have to worry about.

She's probably right. Anyone that's different becomes a target if people are afraid or feel like they're weak. Being a food source would set off a war before the clans had any chance of explaining. [He probably should be just as wary but systematically wiping out humans seemed like a foolish goal for vampires.]

I dunno about everyone else, but considering my teammates and what's I've seen over the years, vampires aren't that strange.

[Gasoline? Steve and some of the doctors had tested different substances to see if he could get drunk but that wasn't something that he'd want to try.] I think we both should pass on something with that much kick.

Bruce isn't the only one you know who's type O. Figured you already knew mine since you had access to my files.

I know. I just - I'm kind of her full time job and it's not fair to her. If this is the dealbreaker for her, I get that.

I wish it wasn't that way. I'm a scientist, I don't see being people as being a species thing. All the hiding and the fear must get exhausting. I'm already tired of it and I'm not even a week in.

[Tony goes quiet at the offer to, well, to feed off of Steve. His first reaction to try and make up some kind of argument against it on the basis of the serum, but the serum probably isn't something that can be transferred. Really, what bothers him is the intimacy of it, not the logistics. Getting close to people emotionally is something Tony sucks at that is forced by the situation, and he's not sure he can deal with it. It's a big step up in their friendship.]

...you don't have to do that for me, Steve. I don't want to use you like that.

I don't think she considers it a job but you have to give her a chance. Let her make a choice with all the information instead of assumptions.

I don't see it that way either, but you know how easy it is for hate to cloud people's judgement. People were isolated and killed just for being different or looking like the enemy. I'd hoped that things would've changed by now but it still happens.

[Steve knows what he suggested is important and Tony has to come to terms with it. If Tony had felt that strongly about that encounter then he has to be careful even if the suggestion is one he has no intentions of taking back.]

You wouldn't be using me since I'm offering. It'd be helping a friend and there's nothing wrong with accepting that help if you want it.

It's not just helping a friend, Steve. It's - it's - shit, I don't have an explanation for it. Everything would be different between us. You have to realize it's usually a one-time deal for a reason. If it becomes a regular thing then that'll make you more susceptible to my mind control powers, which is probably the second creepiest thing about this whole vampire deal, the fact I have those at all, but. You'd be letting me into your head more than you know.

[Tony adds very, very quietly,] I'm not responsible enough for this shit.

I don't expect it to be simple. From what you described it would be very... intimate. [At least he's managed not to blush, but he'll probably start soon.]
I know that and I'm still offering to help. It doesn't have to change things in a bad way if we both know what we're getting into.

[Pausing, he remembers something that had been the notes from Project Rebirth. Tony could be right about what the doctor had done.]

Maybe Doctor Erskine did make me vampire proof. One of the traits he wanted strengthened by the serum was resistance to mind control.

[His expression turns sad and thoughtful as he considers what Tony's going to be going through.]

If you weren't responsible enough for this you wouldn't be trying to talk me out of it or thinking of the safety of the people you might - uh - drink from.

I fuck up the lives of all my closest friends. I just don't want to make that list any bigger than it already is, you know? I'm tired of being the reason things go wrong. What if something happens and we need you and you're still woozy from yours truly? What if somehow the media got ahold of a picture or something and went with the much more obvious conclusion about what we're doing? [He pauses, and adds,] Not that I'd be opposed to them doing that. About time I came out of the bisexual closet anyway, but not if it means taking some straight guy's reputation down in flames in the process and - you see what I mean, about fucking things up? It's just so nonstop.

Well, the Camarilla was in place in Europe at the time, but it was harder for them to enforce laws on vampires like they do now. He might've met one, or had an encounter that didn't get recorded by history. I can see not mentioning it to anyone since, you know, that would make him look more than a little like a madman to people not in the know.

I freaked out so hard over the one guy I did drink from I'm not sure how I'll get through this. I don't like knowing I can just cripple someone like that and it's so easy. I can hurt people. I can kill people. That's messed up. This whole thing is messed up.

[Ilse is capable of sneaking up on Steve. It's a vampire thing; she doesn't mean to startle him when she speaks quietly.]

We indeed already met, Captain. Although given the state I was in at the time, I'll forgive you if you don't recognize me now that I'm healthy.

Ilse. Ilse Weissmuller. [She holds out a hand to him, which will be cold as ice if he takes it, but her expression is as close to a smile as she ever gets, and her voice is quiet, thoughtful.] It's good to get the chance to formally thank you. For everything.

[Even talking about vampires, Steve doesn't expect to find one close by... at least one that isn't Tony. He manages to not startle at the sound of Ilse's voice but he eyes her cautiously before taking her hand.]

It's a pleasure to see you again, Miss Weissmuller. I'm sorry that I don't remember all the details of our first meeting. And that I couldn't do more during the war.

[Even if he'd been there for the end of the war, it wouldn't have been enough. Not after he'd seen the horror of the camps.]

I'm glad we were able to help.

You saved my life. I think that's all anyone can really ask a person to do. Don't act like you didn't work miracles.

[She looks at him with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension, but states anyway:] If you are ever in need of help, you can always come to me. I may only have power in New York, but I owe you. You, and all the others who were there that day that helped us. [They're all dead now, however. Steve is the last person she can extend benefits and protection to.] It will never compare to what you did for me, but if you need anything, just send a message through Tony.

And if anyone ever tries to turn you against your will I will find them. After everything you've done, you deserve to live your life as you want to, not as anyone else does.
