...this is a terrible idea.

I'm used to it here; the darkness doesn't bother me, the silence is now comforting, the chill something I bear without notice. But you! You want to send me back. You want me to follow him into the light and then tear me from him for your own amusement - oh, yes. You call them "games" for good reason, despite your nonchalance. The subject matter shouldn't be taken lightly.

I am not your muse. You should rethink this.

[In the taking away, or the keeping? Because being ordered to let her go (and arranging things so he's unable to do so) is a bit different than a promise or vow. Better question, is she still unable to eat anything while she's down here lest she lose even MORE time above? Because that would just be extra-terribad... Well, maybe food gets imported.

Hercules absently noticed her gentle grace riding him, thanking Zeus for that; this would be so much trickier if he had to constantly adjust her or deal with fearful shrieking. Thanks for picking a good one, Orpheus!]
Punishment? Well, you may wind up cursed, but that's a temporary inconvenience; at least, it is when I return here and pay the price to have the thing lifted. Uncle never could resist a chance to bargain. [The words came out easily even as he picked up the pace, souls and shades going by faster and faster as the wind of their passage began to pick up.]

As for punishing me, that's a trickier notion by far; did I not submit to it freely, there's little he could do to me outside these darkened realms. There's a reason he likes bargaining, you see... [And while Herc's surely not going to rely on it, he does remember Hades calling him 'his favorite nephew' a time or two. He'd given the Lord of the Dead a LOT of business down through the years, after all.

And off in the distance, a spot of healthy green appears- and is gradually growing bigger.]

[personal profile] olympic_lion 2013-09-18 06:12 am (UTC)(link)

Now, now- don't go getting carried away! [He just HAD to say it.

Picking up speed even further as he saw the familiar Fields, he missed the effect they had on his passenger- which would indicate a viable alternative, really, given its manifold charms; lilting music, shady groves, good folk all over, even its own sun and stars. Really, dropping her off in Elysium would be a much more practical solution...

But then, it's not often Hercules claimed to be practical. Besides, he doesn't remember Orpheus there, so best to keep going!]

When it comes to Uncle Hades, it's usually the brute strength that makes the biggest impression. But I can always try the charming smile, right? [Judging his moment finely, Herc put on the brakes to slow and halt their remarkable speed, raising up a cloud of dust amid the barren plain as he skidded to a halt just before the gates of the glorious dead. Best to turn and get away quick; he didn't know who saw the dust of his wake, and he definitely wanted to avoid beloved Megara right now. There's just no way this situation could be explained well!]

Hold on tight, we'll be going MUCH faster now.

[personal profile] olympic_lion 2013-09-18 08:59 am (UTC)(link)

Details, details! [It's a full-throated laugh that escapes him; the strength of her voice and beginnings of a sense of humor are good signs, and the way they're heading at speed away from his biggest fear for this excursion was even better. Beginning to breathe deeply, he picked up the pace even more, the shades around practically blurring by; he may not have any preternatural gifts for speed, but strong legs make up for quite a bit- and after all, he did win the very first Olympic races. ALL of them.]

Who knows, we may... *huff* catch him in... *puff* a maudlin mood. Of course... *gasp* the oak I could have... *pant* just thrown!

[If this trip really is helping her, oh what a scolding he'll get! Still, he really should keep his focus ahead of him, as he goes faster shades grow harder to dodge without losing momentum. Sure he can do it, but even for as experienced a hero as Herc it gets tricky!

Still, the comment on the Mundane is both heartening and worrisome.]
Take a... careful look... behind us! Such praise from... a mundane may mean... she'll let you stay free... or we're about to... be put through the wringer!

[Or possibly both, for that matter; that's the thing about muns. But he really should stop talking, the entryway to Uncle's realm should be coming up soon and he wants to be going flat-out by the time it appears on he horizon.]

[personal profile] olympic_lion 2013-09-19 04:21 am (UTC)(link)

[Herc's powerful chest was heaving like a bellows, he couldn't spare the breath to reply- but his panting mouth curled up in something like a smile at the news. They don't know who's doing this, then. If the dog was all they sent out, we may get clean away yet...

His spirits lifted further as he could see the Court of the Dead; Cerberus may be faster than him, yet still the were nearly out and on their way up to the world above! He'd considered how to pass this hurdle; Minos and Aeacus were family and might let him through, but why burden them with the decision? No, the way you deal with a hurdle is to jump it. Smashing through unprovoked would cause Uncle Hades no end of trouble in recapturing fleeing souls and put him into a truly foul mood for dealing with them, so...]

GONNA... LEAP!

[The words were gasped out as loud as he could manage, his face turned toward her just long enough that she might catch it and hang on like grim- well, life- as he chose his moment, chose his angle, and launched them both into the air, just barely skimming below the cavernous roof enclosing this darkened realm.

Really, without her skill at riding a man, he'd never have dared try an escape this way.]

[personal profile] olympic_lion 2013-09-20 04:00 am (UTC)(link)

Sadly no... but close... enough!

[With a nymph on his back, he couldn't tuck and roll for the landing- and with Cerberus behind him, he refused to accept a full stop. So his legs were pumping even before contact with the ground where he staggered but kept going- not at a sprint now, but a steady marathon pace meant to eat up the distance and let his legendary stamina kick in. That was pretty fast he was going before, after all.]

So much... for the hard part... things should be simpler from here.

[Of course the moment he said that, the baleful howls of three monstrous heads could readily be heard none too far behind them, and getting closer.]

[personal profile] olympic_lion 2013-09-20 06:58 am (UTC)(link)

[He'd regained enough of his breath to chuckle at her offer, even as he slowed further.] It was in facing Cerberus (amongst other things) that I gained my fame in the first place! Besides, I've something of an advantage with this hound that others wouldn't know...

[When the mighty beast of the Underworld was nearly snapping at his heels, Herc Herc slammed one foot down and cracked the stone of the path, slewing around to face backwards even as he disengaged one hand to hold out before him. In a thunderous voice of command, he cried out: ]

CERBERUS! SIT!

[Because what Hercules knew that almost no-one else was aware of, was that a few of his friends had put Uncle Hades' dog through obedience training a few years ago.]

[personal profile] olympic_lion 2013-09-21 06:16 am (UTC)(link)

[Hercules grinned, coming to within arm's reach to offer pettings and skritches.] Who's a good doggie, who's a good girl? That's right, YOU are! And next time I come down I'll bring THREE red rubber balls, just for you!

[Cerberus wasn't so bad once you got past the brutal guardianship, the vast strength, the volcanic breath, the acidic drool, the venomous snake for a tail... The point is, she was a good girl who did her job well! Wouldn't suggest pulling the obedience thing if you're already deceased, though. As it is, Herc's relying on all the sweat he worked up on that run to mask the scene of his passenger.]

Now, show me how you roll over! ROLL OVER, girl- ohh, so good! Now, play dead! PLAY DEAD for me, Cerberus! THAT'S how you do it, stay just like that!

[And at that point, Herc's arm tucked back under Eurydice's leg and he dashed away up the path to the sunlit world above.]

So much for one hurdle, eh?
olympic_lion: (I'm everyone's dope homey.)

[personal profile] olympic_lion 2013-09-22 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's not the gods I learned that from. [Nonetheless, he's still got a pleased-with-himself grin on his face, not that it would readily be seen.]

On the other hand, after that little stunt I daresay they know who they're dealing with. Their next emissary is likely to be one of the few down there that can take me on... Though they'll want to act quickly, the further away we get the more tenuous their case for taking you back becomes. [This part of the trip is likely to take a little while, as winding and jagged as it is he can't really go as fast as he did on the straightaways before At least he can leap the hairpin turns, though? Oooh, speaking of leaping, there's something he meant to bring up.]

How are you holding up? I'd not insult the resilience of a nymph, you've surely been hanging on like a champion- but I can't say as I know how tired the dead get from whatever exertions they go through. [He's mainly worried about her arms, the only thing keeping her upper body in place against him- which kind of unfortunately ensured her chiton was soaking up all his back-sweat from before, sorry about that. But such are rescues!]

[personal profile] olympic_lion 2013-09-22 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)

It's not nearly so grand as that, but perhaps the story might wait for another day? [Wouldn't do to get too distracted by fun times gone by, and lose track of what you're doing in the moment. Especially this moment.]

Such is the plan, such is the plan- But breathe easy, there's few outside the family that can so much as slow me down. Which should be all the better for you; what's it like to start to live again?

[Because despite all the things he had experienced, coming back to life that way was a new one. He'd personally gone from dying to Olympus without anything in between, so it was interesting getting a new perspective from the other side.

And her response brought the smile right back to his face; good for her! Far too many treat a rescue as if it were no more than an inconvenience to be blamed on the rescuer; it's nice to have some cooperation again. Eurydice's stock just keeps rising higher and higher, in Herc's eyes!]

Well said, a lady of the forest is surely a redoubtable figure indeed. With such fleetness of foot, as well I remember! Something that could well come in handy, if I wind up in a confrontation; assuming we meet up with really stiff resistance, think you that you could slip off and run for it while I held our pursuers back?

[Such might be necessary if they sent Thanatos, though Herc had beaten him before, or if Uncle Hades or Cousin Persephone made an appearance- though Persephone probably wouldn't balk them. Sending Herc's murdered mortal wife and children to demand an accounting would likely backfire, he'd just grab them ALL up and keep going... No, there's only those three ladies Herc's worried about facing.

(Because Hercules refuses to even think of the Kindly Ones, lest he draw their attention.)]

[personal profile] olympic_lion 2013-09-26 09:06 am (UTC)(link)

Really. You know, that sounds a truly fascinating process- one I'm not likely to instigate again anytime soon, but it does beg the question. Are you waking from the dream, or falling into it?

[Herc's met a few philosophers, and a little bit sunk in on occasion. Besides, better to have a topic of discussion than thinking about the moaning behind, right? He'll just go ahead and stretch out his strides a little more, try to preserve their lead as long as he can get away with it. Sure, it's likely delaying the inevitable- but isn't that the definition of life?]

It may come to that, but hopefully not too soon. In the meantime, let's get you as far as we can together, eh?

[Because he's not sure just how far that 'don't look at her' stigma holds up right now.]

[personal profile] olympic_lion 2013-09-27 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Mm, I'm fairly sure you're not dreaming the likes of me. And besides, would your imagination include what happened to Cerberus? [Yep, he'll still be amused by that one for a little while; her witnessing that might even make a decent bargaining chip later.]

With that attitude, I've no doubt you'll make it at least; you've got something to live for, right? You might want to keep that in mind. [Wind, wind- who was big on wind down there? He didn't expect Boreas or his brothers, whoever was coordinating this wouldn't have loosed a Titan from Tartarus just for this, would they? If he remembered right, Thanatos was trying out a winged look last time they encountered one another- though it's unlikely he'd be impeded by any kind of wind.

...You know what? Better to keep running over notions than to come to a conclusion, there's nothing to be gained by contemplating whoever's left.]

[personal profile] olympic_lion 2013-09-28 06:26 am (UTC)(link)

Oh, trust me, bribery is most assuredly involved- it's just deferred a little until I get back. She's very fond of her red bouncy balls, you see; I'll probably throw in a steak or three as well.

Because who, person or doggie, doesn't love steaks? Heck, even the gods love a good steak offering- even if the offerer gets to eat it right afterward.

And with wind at his back, Herc has that extra push on forward- though likely not enough to outrun their pursuer, especially with that familiar chill seeing into his skin, it might be just enough to come within sight of daylight before he has to make any confrontation. And what might surprise her, is how cheery Hercules sounds in response to her last comment.]

I daresay it will, fleet Eurydice, I daresay it will. If I'm not mistaken, we're to have company soon- but I suspect I can handle him, though it may require you to step down. We'll see when the time comes, eh?

And in the meantime, you might wish to glance back now and again to see how quickly he comes- Although given his grim visage, you might not, either.
