A New Year

Well now, Miss Mundane, I think now's as good a time as any to start workin' on those resolutions of yours. December will be upon us again before you know it, and you'll be no better off than you are now. Let's see if I can help.

[A pause as he skims the list.]

I can see one issue already. First thing you've got listed is that you're gonna work harder, and as flattered as I am that you'd take the time out of your busy schedule to let me post here, I'm thinkin' that might be a part of the problem right there.

That might be true for some people, but she's not nearly as quick with her work as you are.

If she doesn't get started early, she's just going to end up stressin' out over the fact she didn't get a thing done all year, and I'm not gonna be the one to say I told her so.

Somehow, son, I think it's just going to end up with me plannin' on how to get her to work harder, and her not actually doin' it.

I don't think you're part of the problem, It's more likely you are part of the solution if you scold her like that.

I certainly try ta be. It's not easy when she don't listen to common sense, though.

Certainly not the voice of reason. I expect she'll listen when it's December again and she's panicking, and dang if I ain't a bleeding heart who just wants to help.

Well I wouldn't be here without her. Besides, I like to think I've got other qualities that make me a pretty good guy other than toleratin' a mundane.

That's true and I'd be very sad if I couldn't talk to you anymore. Like I said, you're a good man... for many reasons.

That's true. I guess one of my resolutions ought to be about bein' grateful for the little things.

Maybe I should start a list of things to be grateful for, though I suppose it's a bit too early for that too, ain't it?

There's a difference in fun and gettin' your work done, Spy. Not everyone does both at the same time.

But you could! And she could! You are not being very helpful. She should trade you een on a cat. Zhen eet can disapprove of everyzzing she does, but also be soft and fluffy.

I reckon she'd agree with you. No old cat would get onto her when she's not doin' herself any favors. Cats aren't nearly as helpful as me, though. And trust me, I am bein' helpful whether she realizes it or not.

The usual business a lady her age might have. Cleaning, learnin' a few things here and there. It never hurts to pick up a new skill every now and then, but I'm sure she's gonna procrastinate on that, too.
