And why is that pray tell?

Um... it's a little hard to explain...

[Seriously, you'd think an all-powerful magician would've picked up on something weird about him by now.]

[For being an all powerful wizard he's a little short in the smarts department. And he lives with Soldier which is probably slowly draining his braincells.]

Well, ten years ago, in my world, a group of scientists developed an experiment to try to seal Death in a physical form. They succeeded, though the monster escaped and had to be sealed away inside a young child.

That child grew up, and... well, long story short, the being inside him developed a human form.

And... that's what I am.

[He tries to tell the story quickly. He doesn't really like talking about it, and he's certain now that Merasmus's opinion of him will change. Either he'll hate him, or maybe worship him... or maybe be like his friends and just accept him. It's hard to deal with that kind of change.]

You are the manifestation of death itself?

Hmm..

[He rubs his chin thoughtfully.]

That have any perks?

[Perks, ha. Like Ryoji can even focus on perks.]

I don't get hurt easily, and when I do, it heals quickly. I suppose my other form can attack if I am in danger...

But the flaws are greater than any perks.

Such things always have their downfalls, nothing is free.

[As if he knows.]

Other form?

Oh, um, it's called Thanatos. It's... a little creepy.

But serves its purpose.

..assuming its purpose is to be creepy.

Its original purpose was probably to represent my true self. I don't recall if I looked like that before... I think it was a little different.

Eventually, though, my friend used me in that form to fight for him.

I ... er, you lost me again. People can use you to fight? Are you some sort of familiar?

I had one of those, it was a giant floating eye, until that abomination of a roommate of mine blew it up.

Sort of. My friends could summon demons known as Personas, which represented their inner strength. I was one of them.

... A-Ah, yeah, that sounds similar to what my friends have.

[Although Ryoji is grateful he wasn't blown up.]

So you're not just Death, you're also a summoned spell? Your worlds magic is incredibly strange and distorted.

Eh? You shouldn't like it! I mean, it's okay, but the reason people have powers like that is because of all the monsters there.

Well that's even better! And more magical.

I'm not seeing the problem here.

The monsters hurt people! So many people have gotten sick because of them... And I mean, there's my existence there too. It was dangerous. One of my closest friends is gone now...

So they're plague ridden. Hm. This is more complex than I previously thought.

People should harness them to do battle for them! In a grand and glorious war for supremecy!

[Way to care Merasmus.]

Well, it's not that they're plague ridden... they kind of affect people's minds.

[It's funny you should say that, Merasmus, since technically a few years later people are using them to do battle! Just not exactly in the kind of war that Merasmus would have liked.]

So they are Mesmers? Hypnotists? This land of yours is entirely strange when it comes to the world of magic and monsters. I think there's much that can be learned there.

[Aw. Too bad. He particularly likes the kind of war that wends a certain roommate of his to the respawn over and over and over.]

Not exactly... they take the darkness out of people's hearts, and without that, they're left comatose. They can't do anything but stare and say a few words. It's not good at all...

[Sorry. Ryoji's game is a one kill game over unless you play on easy, and even then it's not infinite respawning. Your roommate would be okay.]

[That does not compute in Merasmus' head.]

Wouldn't taking darkness away be a good thing? In the very black and white thinking of good and evil that is.

Life isn't so black and white. Everyone has a part of them that represents their darkest secrets... It's an important part, just as important as the goodness in them. If that dark part of their soul is taken away from them, then they can never accept that part of themselves. They don't find the strength that comes from accepting themselves, and they lose the will to live.

When people accept their darkness, then it becomes part of their inner strength. My friends could summon their Persona because they had suffered through terrible things, but they accepted them and moved on.

Sooooo they summoned the dark part that fought for them? Hmm. This is incredibly complex. Perhaps it warrants more research. MAGICAL research.

[Research that isn't sitting around making marshmallows with someone.]

Where do I find these Persona people?
