I don't know what you're looking at me for. You knew that things weren't all sunshine and daisies over there after it all went down. 

Things will work out, though. They always do. Maybe not how we planned-- okay, really, really not like how we planned, but they'll work out. Carolina's got Wash, and. Well, she's got the others, too, and maybe they ain't the rest of us back home, but I think at this point, that's exactly what she needs.

It'll all work out.

Anyway, what was I supposed to do? Take a survey about whether or not I should try to go to someone about the Director? That's not how it works.

[agentdork]

No, but you ought to have told us something. Hell, anything, Connie, besides the Director is using this and that for bad things. I know you were right, but we didn't have anything to go off of!

[Not to him, no, not directly...but she'd tried to talk to them, at least to see if anyone else felt the same suspicions she had, as much as she could without giving the whole game away.

And there's one person she had told, or attempted to tell, but he hadn't listened at all.

She grits her teeth, hands clenched into fists at her sides, sounding hopeless.]

I tried to warn him.

[ Amazing how a few words make him just feel like a heel.

York tips his head back and exhales, just staring at the ceiling for a moment and then reaching out, curling his arm around her shoulders in an awkward hug, letting her push forward if she wants. ]

He always was pretty thick, huh?

[Her shoulders stiffen as he wraps his arm around her; she doesn't knock him away from her, but her fingers curl tightly around the edge of her seat as she stares forward stonily.

She'd never actually admit to him how much she needed that hug.]

He never listened.

[agentdork]

He listened to D. Except D was kind of awful and always got him to try these horrible things, like drinking through his helmet.

[ She doesn't push him away so he leans forward and squeezes her as much as armor allows, and then moves back. ]

He never listened to me.

[She turns away from him slightly, but not until he's moved his arm away, just turning her head and staring at the floor.]

And look where it got him.

[agentdork]

Could always be worse.

[ Wash is alive, after all. Alive and stubborn. ]

Chin up, kiddo. You couldn't help it, okay?

[She frowns, shaking her head and rolling her eyes a little bit at his stubborn optimism.]

That doesn't make it any better.

[agentdork]

No, it doesn't. But I know dwelling on it doesn't make it any better, either.

So what am I supposed to do? Just shrug and say "oh well, it could be worse?"

[agentdork]

What else can we do, huh?

[She shrugs her shoulders, glancing away from him. Saying "oh well" and letting it go has never been CT's style, but when he puts it like that...well, he's right. There's nothing they can do to undo what had happened, not now.]

...I don't know.
