I don't know what you're looking at me for. You knew that things weren't all sunshine and daisies over there after it all went down. 

Things will work out, though. They always do. Maybe not how we planned-- okay, really, really not like how we planned, but they'll work out. Carolina's got Wash, and. Well, she's got the others, too, and maybe they ain't the rest of us back home, but I think at this point, that's exactly what she needs.

It'll all work out.

[She was going to say something about how he has bad pick-up lines, but right now she can't muscle up the nerve to say one bad thing about him.]

Probably. It's not like I can like you for your lock picking skills.

[She's teasing, of course, because it's easier than talking about the heavier issues at hand.]

And we weren't downers, we were realistic. Always knew what we were getting into from the start.

No, but bad stuff happens to good people. Getting worked up about it won't fix things.

Nope, you won't, 'cause I'm not gonna let you.

[ York waves a hand at her, shaking his head. She doesn't need to apologize-- she's always taken things too hard, worked too hard, pushed herself too hard. He doesn't want her punishing herself over things either. ]

Don't need you to, okay? So don't. We're all good, Carolina.

The probability of everything turning out in Carolina's favor is extremely unlikely. Moreover, there is nothing we can go to assist her.

Why do you insist it will "work out"?

Neither will lying to yourself and saying it's all okay when it isn't.

[agentdork]

Because, I can't-- listen to how that sounds, D.

[ He won't even say it, because he can't consider the fact that Carolina might fail. That's not something that he ever wanted to consider before, and sure as hell not right now. ]

It's a human thing, maybe. Or just a me ting, I dunno. But I don't want to instantly just go to the idea that everything is gonna fail and it's all for nothing.

Downers, realistic, whatever.

[ He waves a hand, maybe just a little amused. ]

It's all the same to me. We all knew what we were getting into when we signed up. Kinda the risk you take.

[agentdork]

[ She's right, but that doesn't make anything any better. ]

No, it doesn't. It's messed up, Connie, and we both know that, but dwelling on it is just gonna make it worse.

[alaspooryork]

[He tilts his head to the side. It sounds logical to him.]

So you would prefer to believe in the lower probability, despite the odds?

[Admittedly, York does this a lot.]

[CT laughs, bitterly.]

Worse? How could it be worse?

It's over. For both of us.

...yeah, I guess. Makes it sound a little more pathetic that way, though.

[ He smiles wryly all the same. ]

They'll work out how they're meant to work out. I'm just-- y'know, sorry they didn't work out in our favor.

Of course it is.

[She gives him a cautious look after a moment. There's no easy way to bring up the recently revealed events.]

You think we've got a shot at the Director?

[agentdork]

I think it's going to be a helluva a fight and I don't think it'll be any sort of easy, but yeah. If there is anyone that I got faith in taking down the Director, it's you and Wash.

[agentdork]

It could mean nothing. We could've all died and the Director got away with what he did, and done it to a handful of other people. Instead, there are people doing something about it.

[improvising]

[He's the one with hope and faith, but Carolina knows he wouldn't say something like that if he didn't think they had a legitimate chance. The only person who knew all of the parties involved best was him, after all.]

Even with the rest of them?

Agreed.

[He pauses for a moment, unsure quite how to word the next bit.]

However, I have no complaints about our time together. You were an ideal partner.

[ Oh, honey.

York hesitates a moment in return, and curls his hand around the hologram, wishing (not for the first time and not for the last) that there was something tangible there. ]

You were pretty ideal yourself, D.
