I don't know what you're looking at me for. You knew that things weren't all sunshine and daisies over there after it all went down. 

Things will work out, though. They always do. Maybe not how we planned-- okay, really, really not like how we planned, but they'll work out. Carolina's got Wash, and. Well, she's got the others, too, and maybe they ain't the rest of us back home, but I think at this point, that's exactly what she needs.

[She's teasing, of course, because it's easier than talking about the heavier issues at hand.]

And we weren't downers, we were realistic. Always knew what we were getting into from the start.

[ He waves a hand, maybe just a little amused. ]

It's all the same to me. We all knew what we were getting into when we signed up. Kinda the risk you take.

The probability of everything turning out in Carolina's favor is extremely unlikely. Moreover, there is nothing we can go to assist her.

Why do you insist it will "work out"?

Because, I can't-- listen to how that sounds, D.

[ He won't even say it, because he can't consider the fact that Carolina might fail. That's not something that he ever wanted to consider before, and sure as hell not right now. ]

It's a human thing, maybe. Or just a me ting, I dunno. But I don't want to instantly just go to the idea that everything is gonna fail and it's all for nothing.

[She was going to say something about how he has bad pick-up lines, but right now she can't muscle up the nerve to say one bad thing about him.]

Guess I have a chance to say 'I'm sorry' here.

[ York waves a hand at her, shaking his head. She doesn't need to apologize-- she's always taken things too hard, worked too hard, pushed herself too hard. He doesn't want her punishing herself over things either. ]

[Carolina shifts her weight lightly, watching him through her visor; she can't forgive herself as easily as York will. Instead stubbornness pushes through, like she won't ever get this chance again and once again she thinks it's all about her.] I should have listened to you.

[ He laughs faintly, spreading his hands wide in a clear shrug. ]

Yeah. Can I get that on paper?

Yeah. If there's one thing I've learned from those idiots, it's to never discount the power of blind dumb luck.

[Just... have a sigh, however robotic it may sound.]

Kind of wish that Carolina could've pulled the stick out of her ass sooner. Maybe things would've worked out a bit better if she had been working with me instead of against me....

[ OOOOH GURL. York stiffens at that, straightening up and squaring his shoulders. ]

Carolina wasn't perfect, but you can't say any of us were back then. Besides. You could have worked with her.

I did what I did to keep everybody safe, dammit. I'm out there, saving your asses, getting my objectives done, and keeping intel that could put all of you in danger out of the wrong hands, and what happens?

Carolina sulks and gets all the sympathy, and I'm demonized. You really think that CT wouldn't have done the same goddamn thing to Carolina if the position was reversed? CT was the enemy. She tried to kill Carolina. And with the info she had, the enemy could've come in and slit all your throats in your sleep.

I'm fucking tired of being the bad guy here.

You did it without telling your team what the hell you were doing. You may have had objectives and things to do but you don't ever keep your team in the dark like that.
