[He'd comment further, but something tells him that keeping Gideon in the dark is the wisest thing to do.
Besides, he's not done here yet. Not even close.]
I'm sorry, but luck didn't have ANYTHING to do with it. You almost got us all killed! And for what, a stupid book?!
No, no the ONLY thing that's lucky here is the fact that Mabel still had her grappling hook on her, because if not? ...being in jail for lying to and conning the entire town would be the least of your problems.
Well it doesn't even matter now, Gideon. They're not really going to do you much good behind the bars of a jail cell, are they? And the book you took from me wasn't yours. It was mine. I found it first, fair and square. They're better off not in your hands at any rate.
Well, you kinda would have had murder on your track record, but like I said....lucky Mabel came prepared.
THEY'RE EVEN LESS USE TA'YOU! YA DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THEY HOLD! I ALMOST FINALLY HAD MY CHANCE, I WAS SO CLOSE AND YA RUINED IT! EV'RYTHIN' I'VE WORKED FOR, YA RUINED ALL OF IT! YA RUINED EVERYTHING!!
[He's not just yelling in a way where's he's unbelievably enraged, he also seems... upset. Devastated, even. Like he's trying not to cry.]
[He pauses and steps back though when what Dipper said now better sinks in. Yeah, they all kind of... could have been killed... In fact it's something of a miracle all three of them weren't horribly injured at the very least. He could have died. ... Mabel could have died. What would he do then?
Gideon clenches his fists at his sides and looks back at Dipper, his expression probably the most morose, bitter and hateful it's ever been.]
... I don't expect ya ta'understand. No one does, and they never will... 'less I make 'em.
[Dipper just grimaces, jamming his hands into his pockets.]
That's all you ever do though, isn't it? Make people do things. You know I was hoping one of these days you'd learn your lesson. ...I don't know. Maybe now you will.
[Meanwhile, Gideon's tone continues to be scathingly acidic.]
And what lesson's that? Tell me Dipper, what're ya hopin' I'll "learn"? 'Cause I already know more than any'a ya ignorant fools could ever think ta'comprehend.
[He pauses, glaring at Gideon for a moment or two. Finally he sighs, his expression softening only just.]
Look, Gideon. I don't know nor do I care about what you know, but what I do know is all you care about is getting what you want, and you don't care how you do it. You don't care if....if you have to lie, or cheat, or steal your way to the top either, do you? Just as long as you get what you're after, you don't care how many people have to take the fall for it.
I was hoping you'd realize that.
[Or maybe he already does? Perhaps he truly just doesn't care about anyone but me, myself, and I, barring Mabel of course.]
[This time, Dipper's glare nearly completely vanishes, his expression turning from one of anger and disdain for Gideon...to confusion.]
....What?
[His expression contorts further, because he really can't wrap his head around this.]
Gideon, what are you talking about? ...Nobody has ever done anything to you. All this town has ever DONE is love you! If Stan hadn't come and showed everyone the truth, they probably would have believed every word of your story and would have had me and Mabel locked up instead of you.
[That causes Dipper to start slightly, his eyes widening.]
You....
[....Well now the accent does make a bit more sense, yes. To be honest, Dipper had always figured Gideon just put on that accent as another one of his elaborate acts to fool people into thinking he was innocent and adorable.
Now he's grimacing again, but it's obvious he's still bewildered by this new revelation.]
So what did bring you here, then? Those stupid journals? Is that it?
[He wouldn't be surprised if Gideon's entire driving force revolved around those things at this point.]
[There's also the fact his father has the same accent, so no, as shocking as it might be to Dipper there was nothing fake about his southern origins. And it being such a surprise to him only makes Gideon further believe that Dipper is completely benighted. Exactly like everyone else.]
Ya REALLY wanna know?
[Because the answer is something that may, legitimately, be unexpected.]
We moved up here 'cause dad thought a quiet, peaceful lil' Oregon town with lots'a fresh air would be good for me... After I'd spent most'a my life in the hospital.
[That practically renders the boy speechless. It's hard to tell what he's thinking, as unreadable as his expression has suddenly become. He just seems...stunned. Skeptical of course, but mostly stunned.
The hospital?
Well now he's not sure what to believe anymore. More importantly, he's not sure if he should believe that Gideon's telling him the truth at all. Still, with how emotionally he's acting right now, it's hard to be completely convinced that he's lying.
A sudden feeling of dread fills Dipper, causing him to shudder and take a short step back.]
[Well Dipper, looks like in addition to getting back the Mystery Shack and staying in Gravity Falls, your reward for defeating your arch-enemy? Is his backstory. Seems a little overdue, doesn't it? While your suspicion isn't unwarranted, Dipper, there's nothing about Gideon right now that suggests what he's saying is anything but the truth.]
Do ya know what it's like, bein' sick almost all the time? Havin' ta'take medicine every day, several times a day? Or when ya ain't allowed outside 'less your covered from head'ta toe, 'cause a'what the sun might do ta'your skin? Or barely bein' able ta'see 'til half a dozen surgeries, and then STILL needin' ta'wear glasses? [Or specialty prescription contacts, as he has on now.] Or doctors tellin' your parents ya probably ain't gonna live ta'see your tenth birthday, 'cause "If cancer don't get him, the infections will"?! Or at school, when ya could even go ta'school, bein' picked on, pushed around, beat up and CALLED A FREAK?!
[Dipper jumps, recoiling slightly as he listens to Gideon's story, that feeling of dread intensifying the more of it he tells. Suddenly, Dipper isn't feeling that sense of accomplishment that he had before, knowing he'd gotten Gideon arrested and managed to beat him up to boot.
Suddenly, he's beginning to feel rather sick.
For a long time he just stares at Gideon, wide eyed, his eyes darting. He doesn't just feel sick. He feels bad. Really bad. ....For Gideon.
And even deeper than that sick feeling is a burning hatred for allowing himself to feel this way, after everything Gideon had done to him and his family. NOTHING could excuse that....right?
He doesn't answer though and backs down, his curiosity and confusion completely stamped out at this point. Now he's wishing he'd never asked.]
I didn't-......
......know.
[That's all he can manage before finally breaking eye contact with Gideon, forced to look at the ground.]
[When Dipper glances down, Gideon slowly turns away as well. From his reaction, the albinistic boy can somewhat guess the tormenting conflict Dipper is experiencing. How's it makes him feel? That it only serves him right. Not that Gideon told him all of this to make him feel bad. No, he never wanted his sympathy. He never wanted anyone pitying him, or treating him like a lesser human being just because of his condition. He only ever wanted to be accepted, for who he was. Now he couldn't care less about that. The bridge was long burned. Because while he may have been born with a weak body, what he also had, more importantly, was a strong brain. Stronger than most children... maybe even most adults. Much stronger. So he'd use it, until all those plebeians were eating out of the palm of his little pale hand... the same one they once mocked him for. That's why Gideon didn't care who he'd have to step on, abuse, or absolutely destroy to get his way. Because in his embittered blue eyes, icy and cold like his view of the world, the human race was more monstrous than anything supernatural he ever encountered. And in the end, they deserved it.]
[Unsure how to respond, Dipper just keeps his eyes trained on the ground, scuffing his shoe against the dirt a little with unease. He really doesn't know what he's supposed to think anymore, as far as Gideon is concerned. Gideon doesn't deserve his sympathy regardless of the fact that he never wanted it in the first place. All the more reason for Dipper to loathe himself for feeling this way. For feeling...bad.
Maybe it's just due to the way he was raised. Always try to do the right thing and do right by others, no matter how badly they treat you. While he admittedly has his own selfish tendencies, he doesn't want to become that person. That person who belittles others for their shortcomings.
So what's he supposed to say? That he's....sorry for everything he's done to Gideon? That he's sorry for fighting back when he's not? This is too personal, something he'd have been better off never knowing.]
I can't help what happened to you before you came to Gravity Falls. But...that's still no reason for you to treat people here the way you do.
Maybe..
[He hesitates. It might not be smart to be suggesting this at all, but now he feels like it's something he needs to say while he can.]
Maybe you should have just tried to give this town a chance. Things might have been different then.
[Gideon doesn't turn back to the other boy, pausing again before responding. When he does, his voice is shaky again... it's cracking, as though on the verge of choking up.]
Sick n' tired'a "Maybe"s...
[He's faced uncertainty his whole life, and his days of hoping for miracles are gone.]
Gravity Falls ain't no different from any other town. ... 'Least it's people ain't. They're monsters, ev'ry last one'a them! Brainless, inane, OBLIVIOUS FOOLS! WHY SHOULD I GIVE THEM A CHANCE WHEN THEY NEVER GAVE ME ONE?!
[Dipper can't see it, but there's tears now in Gideon's eyes. He's tried so hard to fight it back as hard as he can, but he... can't, anymore. Those awful memories all coming back, on top of total defeat... It's become too much for him.]
[Dipper can hear the emotion in Gideon's voice when he responds, and it's only serving to make him feel more uncomfortable than he already is.
When Gideon raises his voice again Dipper looks back up at him, frowning hard. As much as he hates to say it, Gideon does have some sort of point. Why would he want to give any part of humanity a second chance for the way he'd been treated before, even after moving to a completely new town with new people? Not that that excuses all of the terrible things Gideon's done.
Dipper's still not sure he fully understands anyway. All of this is a lot for him to try and take in and be expected to believe all at once. He stares silently at Gideon for a little bit longer before dropping his gaze back to the ground again, gritting his teeth.
Sorry Gideon, but he can't really answer that. Rather, he really doesn't know what to say.]
[Gideon covers his own face as tears run down his cheeks, even though he's still turned away from Dipper. It doesn't change the fact he's ashamed of actually crying over this. He was better than that... or so he thought. He lost, and now one of his worst enemies knew the truth. The truth that Gideon never wanted Dipper to know, as much as Dipper now wishes he hadn't learned it. He'd only broken down and told him because... well, exactly that. He was broken. The world had hurt him, he'd tried to fight back... and look where it's gotten him? It wasn't fair... it just wasn't fair...
While he stands there, trembling in silence, it's possible Dipper can hear the sounds of him sniffling, sobbing... But with neither boys having anything more to say, Gideon begins to walk away. He's not sure why he waited this long to leave, but he doesn't to be here anymore. He wants to be alone, far away from anything and anyone. Especially Dipper, before the other boy realizes just how much he's managed to destroy him from the insight out.
[Dipper had been struggling with himself this entire time, trying to decide if he should try to say anything else or not. It's only when he catches the faint sounds of Gideon crying that he shuts up completely, biting his lip to keep himself completely silent. Even as Gideon walks away, he still says nothing, watching him as he goes.
He hates how bad this makes him feel. The guilt is sickening, not like he can do anything about it. Maybe if Mabel were here she would have a better idea of what to do. He's almost certain she'd try to do....something. But he on the other hand? He doesn't know what to do. Just standing there is the only thing he can think of.
He might have bested Gideon finally, but the victory is far from a joyful one anymore.]
