[Kai frowns a little. He's pretty sure it was after his mother disappeared, and uncle Sora was trying to cheer him up. He shakes his head when she mentions the seashell. Where'd that come from?]

Naw, it's okay- how'd a seashell get into this conversation?

[ Xion digs around in her coat pocket and retrieves one thalassa shell. ]

[Did he? Great, now he's confused. Then again, he's got a lot on his plate these days.]

[He reaches out to take the shell from her and smiles faintly. It's pretty.]

[Kai reaches up and tugs on his bangs, then grins at her suddenly. She has a look he remembers seeing when he was a kid, from a girl that lived in the apartment down the way.]

[He's suddenly in a much better mood than earlier. Weird.]

[ How is she supposed to pass up an invitation like that? Her fingers land right in his hair. Gloved fingers, mind you. ]

[He laughs and lets her mess with it before pulling away.]

Oh sure, the hair'll do it. I can summon Heartless, and if that's not scary enough, whack people with a Keyblade, but it'll probably take the hair to incite any real terror.

[Sarcastic, him? Never. He's still grinning a bit though, so he's not mad at her or anything.]

Eh, Pitch just seems to think I'm useless because I'm not worth the effort of killing. That's my opinion, though. The not worth the effort part, I mean.

[ Hesitating. He said Heartless. And Keyblade. ]

[Kai tilts his head curiously for a moment. That's sort of a weird question to ask.]

Last time I checked. Wanna see it?

[He holds out his right hand, and Heart's Star materializes in his grasp. He turns the silver and black blade from side to side, eyeing it critically.]

Heart's Star. My mother's nickname for me. When I was a kid, anyway.

[ Oh. ]

[ Oh, it is real. Xion almost touches it, but draws her hand back suddenly. ]

She must l-love you. [ Xion thinks that's the right word. She's not sure. ]

[He saw that movement there. Kai almost wants to tell her that it doesn't bite, that's more Blooming Crystal's thing, but he doesn't. Instead he just glances down at the Keyblade, tightening his grip for a moment before dismissing it.]

She did- does. And I stopped being a kid when she disappeared. So, I don't know, when I was almost nine? I went to live with dad- Riku, after that.

[ Riku? She thinks she knows that name. Not sure where, though... ]

...Why did your mom go away? [ All her data says that moms take care of you. ]

[For just a second, Kai looks absolutely lost. How many times did he ask himself that same question? How many times did he ask his dad, and his uncle, and his aunt? But then the look is gone, and he just shrugs, glancing down at the thalassa shell in his left hand. He hadn't realized he was still holding it.]

Dunno. I woke up from a nightmare and she was just- gone.

[Kai sticks the shell in his pocket, careful not to break it.]

She used to fool around with Darkness a lot before I was born, so maybe that had something to do with it. Maybe not. I know she wouldn't have just decided to up and leave me, though. But I've been okay.

[A faint grin tugs at his mouth.]

Marjem doesn't let me sulk too much.

[ Stupid darkness. Stupid moms... ]

[The grin turns into an outright smirk. Oh, if 'Jem heard that.]

Marjem. She's twelve, follows me everywhere. Couldn't get rid of her if I tried.

Okay, so I wouldn't try, actually. She's been traveling with me since she was ten. I kinda...saved her.

[The smirk falters, then fades into a less smug smile.]

She's pretty much my best friend.

[Is it weird, being seventeen and having a twelve year old girl for a best friend? Probably. Kai doesn't really care. He saved 'Jem, she saved him, everything works.]
