The whole point of knowing how much to figuratively bite off is so you don't get full.
Being full is bad.
Being full means that whatever situation you are in can push you to your limits in a matter of moments.

When someone isn't used to being full, eating enough to that point could very well be bad for them. Simply put your body couldn't handle it.
I don't even know why I'm consenting to continue this over-arching metaphor.
But you're right. We will have to push our limits. When the only thing you have done is push them though, it seems a little more mundane.
