I can't. I really tried to, too, but the truth is they're not cut-out for this. They're kids and new mutants and I'm pushing them further than should ever be asked for them. They're not even six-months old as mutants and I made them help take out a new brand of Sentinel we'd never seen before.
I can't give them the break and time they want. And because I can't they'll never stop hating me.
Two people in my life have pushed me in to using my abilities. The first was a monster, and I hated him with every ounce of my being. The second was the closest friend I ever had, and the one person I care for above all others. Bother Schmidt and Charles chose entirely different methods for themselves. But they were each capable of pushing me in to doing more than I would ever have been capable of doing alone.
You can get results from them, Hope. You just need to decide whether you want to be their friend or their owner. It can't be both.
I'm not after power results. Their powers aren't like yours, slow to develop. They're there, fully fledged and pretty damn intense too. It's the battlefield they can't handle... but it's where I have to take them to complete my missions.
My abilities were forced in to existence. There wasn't any "slow" about it.
But that's beside the point. You may not see it right now, but there's little difference between your relationship between them on the battlefield and off of it. You either stand beside them to face whatever comes their way, or you step back and lead them from the sidelines.

:|]
It'll take a great deal more than that for you to disappoint me.

Wait.
Really?

I may not approve of who he is, but you're attempting to protect mutantkind.
What do you think?
no subject
Oh.
Well okay. Glad you don't entirely hate me now.

You thought I hated you?
no subject
Possibly affirmative.

Did you ever think to ask?

I work better when I assume every one hates me.

Including your team, if I remember correctly.
Perhaps it's time to change that attitude.

Including my team.
I can't make people like me.
[ Wait.... can she do that? ]

You can prove to them that you're worth their time and respect instead.
