[ Refraining from the most incredulous eye-roll, for now: ] You said this would be an adventure, and there would be a lot of important people for me to meet.
[ She gracefully crosses her arms, seeming much older than ten, the spitting image of her mother to any who knew, and possibly, dangerously, to some who didn't.
In truth, she was hoping she might meet family here she otherwise couldn't, but so far this looked more like her private studies than a magical source of adventure. ] Well then, where is everyone?

They always say it'll be an adventure and the next thing you know? You're getting kidnapped in the marketplace.

Oh good, someone who wasn't terribly old and didn't appear to be hunting her. She smiled at the girl. ]
Hello. I'm Leia. You're very pretty.
[ There were too many annoying boys in her life back home, or handmaids who had to be nice to her, or adults with agendas. It had been awhile since she'd even met another young girl, and no, kids fleeing the Empire with the rebels while she'd been with Obi-Wan didn't count. ]
A friend and I already escaped getting kidnapped at a marketplace, I'd rather never have to do that again.

Thank you.
[ It's almost shy, considering she'd been training to be a courtesan. But then that Jedi had just barged in, snatched her up and taken her away from everything... Don't get her wrong, there are some things she's not sorry at all to leave behind, but she still wants Freema. ]
A Jedi kidnapped me.
[ A sigh. ]
Not that I'm not grateful, it's just... I wish he hadn't been so public about it. A nice quiet sale from my Mistress to him would have been much better.

[ She thought of Obi-Wan and the rebels she had escaped the empire with, and the people they helped save. From, what, she was still working through, but she knew they had risked their lives to help people, and she knew Obi-Wan was good, and he was a Jedi. Why would a Jedi kidnap someone?
Leia frowned. ]

But what? He is the Hero with No Fear, there's not many people who are going to argue with him.
[ She'd tried and basically been shoved in a room and told to stay put. ]
My name is Misa by the way.

[ The woman is older, in her early forties. Her clothing is neat - pressed, tidily put on - but clearly old and of rough, cheap fabric and spotted with stains she's been unable to entirely remove. Cooking oil, machine oil, alcohol, and a few spatters of very old blood. Her skin is the kind of dark you only get from a lot of solar radiation and she has tiny freckles over her skin, her jewelry handmade. But she feels warm, like a hug you never want to leave, and strong as durasteel. ]
[ Even though she's not tall, she bends down on a knee to be level with Leia's eyes. So the girl needn't look up. ]
Your eagerness to meet new people reminds me of my son.

She was trying to get used to sudden appearances. The woman who approached her had a humble, kind, and strong aura that immediately made Leia feel safe, and like she didn't need to pretense as much. Though young, her instincts hadn't failed her yet.
As the woman kneeled closer, Leia noticed her freckles, and the braid in her hair, and suddenly felt the intense urge to let everything she had been through recently overwhelm her. For someone fiercely independent, she always made her way home because of how she longed for her mother's embrace and sweet scent, and her father's mischievous smile and laugh. Then, she would remember she had once had another mother and father, and be drawn away to adventure once again.
Leia gave a toothy, curious smile. ]
Hello. I think your braid is very pretty. [ She blushed a bit, cherubic in her youth. ]
Is your son here too?
the injustice of her life: to not get to embrace her son's wife and hold their babies
And while she intellectually knows who Leia is - the benefit of kicking around in someone's head for a while - she's surprised that the girl feels familiar, feels a little like Ani. Maybe it shouldn't be a surprise. ]
Thank you. So is yours. Did you put it up by yourself?
He's around. Ani's never been one to stay in one place very long.

I did it myself. I'm supposed to let others others dress me properly, but sometimes I don't want to wear a dress and smell like flowers. Sometimes I want to explore the forest with Lola and squish my toes in the dirt. [ She pauses. ] I miss home, today.
[ Shmi feels vaguely familiar, though Leia doesn't understand why, or the source of the feeling. Though young, she was very good with names and faces and knew better than to forget to pay attention when being introduced to new people. She couldn't know the woman, she figured, but she wanted to. ]
I don't get to stay in one place very long either. We have to move around a lot and keep everything secret. I'm not supposed to ask questions or talk to strangers, but that's not very fun.
[ A pout betraying her age crosses her face briefly before she fixes it. ]

[ Motherly intuition? Whatever it is what allows her to always know where her son is, no matter what? Shmi doesn't know and she allows the universe to keep its secrets. But it's asked anyway, suspecting the latter. ]
It's hard when you are away from home, having an adventure you didn't plan for and don't get to control.
[ She sits, cross-legged, patting her skirt down smooth and patting the ground beside her. ]
That wouldn't be very fun. Would you rather sit with me? I'd love to hear about Lola.

I like being pretty... But it makes it difficult to adventure. Sometimes it makes people expect me to do things I don't want to do. And it makes boys think I'm silly and not take me seriously even though I am better than them at everything.
[ Yes, everything. In her immodest opinion, anyway. Stupid boys. Talk about things you can't control. Annoyed thoughts are disrupted by the kind invitation to sit. ]
Really? I would love to! Thank you.
[ Leia grins and unceremoniously plops down beside Shmi and takes out Lola to show her. Lola blinks awake and chirps happily as Leia begins to enthusiastically share everything she knows about the droid model and what it can do and some of the ways she's learned to customize and alter it, mostly forgetting to breathe. Congratulations, Shmi. You have granted permission for yet another mechanic-savvy child to infodump about droids. ]
Shmi's life has NOT been sunshine and roses so yeah this is dark sorry
[ Shmi si well aware of what dangers and difficulties a pretty little slave would have are vastly different than the dangers and difficulties a pretty little princess would have. Or at least it should. ]
And some boys are very silly. [ Shmi scrunched her nose and makes a face. ] Sometimes they need someone to show them up and some just never learn. But there are boys out there who aren't like that. You might find them if you look.
[ Once Leia sits, Shmi pays rapt attention to Leia, and her Lola. If Leia looks, there are numerous tiny scars on her hands, from drops of solder and sharp pieces of wire. There's so much of Ani in the girl it makes her heart ache. She knew there were markets for infants, healthy pretty infants, and had she done the right thing, keeping her miracle wonderful boy with his magical fixit hands? Would he have been better off in the hands of people like Leia's parents than at her breast? She thought she knew the answer but now...she doubted. And yet even as she did, Leia had her attention, Shmi asking questions that proved she knew how to work on droids and how they worked. Encouraging her to talk and have a moment to be a child. ]
