The hell's the matter with you?

Just- just look at half these places, they don't even got computers, let alone an internet connection. Probably have to walk halfway to Mordor if I want to get myself a damn soda, too, just look at all the crap everyone in these games has to put up with, man. What'd I even do to you to make you wanna do anything like this?

...No, just because half the people out there are from video games doesn't make it worth it. I wanna see them, I can pull up a computer chair and get it going somewhere I'm not gonna get shot in the head, or get a sword in the chest, or someone hitting me with some damn poison, or nothing like that. Ain't worth it, man. Ain't worth it.

Now, see, that sounds like a good time. Give me a nice hotel room, one of them really comfy beds with fresh sheets, free room service, and some half-decent wi-fi, and I might just go along with this. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about, none of this... post-apocalyptic, survival-horror crap.

Is that like the in thing? I just got here, but it seems like most of these games are pretty cruel. And me, I like the fact that my biggest problem is not ticking off the people in my office.

Yeah, that's always the thing, everyone always be killing each other, or starving to death, or there's ghosts or zombies or giant monsters just waiting to do their thing. If it don't come with super powers, standard, that just ain't right, man, I'd rather do the boring office thing like you the rest of my life.

Well, it's not boring, but it isn't going to kill me. [She laughs and offers a hand.] I'm Tessanne.

I dunno, girl, I've done the office thing before and the politics, they are killer. [Handshake time? Handshake time.] Hardison. Alec Hardison.

It's really nice to meet you. [She shakes his hand with a smile. Despite being full of turkey and pie Tessanne is quite perky.] My job's kind of fun. I'm my brother's personal assistant at a law firm. So wherever he goes, I get to go.

Back atcha. [Oh, was it a holiday? He kind of gets a little... distracted, but he's always all smiles anyway.] Sounds like a lot more fun than sitting around a cubicle trying to get people all motivated and stuff. Me, I'm, uh... I'm an independent computer contractor. [That's code for internationally-wanted computer hacker.] Really boring stuff, nothing to write home about.

I know my way around a computer or two. Not Bill Gates-type stuff, mind you, but it's pretty much a job requirement for any decent investigation. What are you using?

Ha, Bill Gates? I could tell you some stories about that guy. [Like most geeks, he's not a giant fan of Windows. Just because.] And yeah, yeah, I feel you about investigating, I've traced a couple people through the web. [Now, he laughs.] Aww, girl, I could be here all day listing the tech I use. Gotta have a bit of everything, you know what I mean?

If the rest of us could only have that luxury. [She laughed.] I damn near got killed buying my brother an XBox One for Christmas. That's my technological coup of the year.

[Ooh, now she said it. He makes a face.] An Xbone, for real? No, man, no, that's just wrong. If you gotta get a man a console, and there ain't nothing wrong with that, don't get one of them.

What? [Oh now there's a confused face.] Aside from it not being backwards compatible, I thought this was supposed to be the Next Big Thing.

[Iiiit's geek time. He's going to a raise a hand and start listing features now.] I'm not gonna knock it for not being backwards compatible, but it's more expensive, and it's got less power under the hood, and there's the whole thing where that hardware under that hood keeps failing, and you know how easy it would be for a decent hacker to spy on you through it?

[A hacker like him, mind.]

...I should've gone PS4, shouldn't I.

That's a better idea, yeah, but consoles are always rough at launch, gotta remember that. Now, you really want to give a good geek boy a nice Christmas present, you gotta get him a tricked out PC, that's where it's at.

Andrew's not really a geek. He's an ex-Marine who likes playing Forza in his spare time. When he's not accidentally scaring off most guys who come anywhere near me.

Ooh, scary bruiser dude, huh? Sure he didn't want some kinda new guitar or a country music CD or something?

[He... just has to check that his own scary ex-military man isn't standing around ready to slap him for that one.]

Funny. I'm actually the one more likely to be playing the guitar. Though I haven't in awhile.

Ah, yeah? Props for the music skills, either way. I used to play violin, but I haven't played in a long while, either, except this one time I don't wanna get into.

Nah, it's no big deal. You talk to folks online or over the phone, right? That's almost enough socialization to go around.
