Hello. [He gives her a long, hard look.] You're not me, I hope? Or anyone else I know. Daughter, lover, third cousin twice-removed, wife who's also my best friends' time-displaced assassin child...

No. [She smiles at him, trying to be reassuring.] I'm Janie Taylor, and I'm... curious. I don't have any family.

Wife who is also your best friends' time-displaced assassin child? Now that sounds like an interesting story. Not much fun at reunions, I take it?

Not my wife. Not that I have a wife. [Frowns] Not that I have a wife yet. Might have one. In the past. Or the future.

[Shrugs] Life of a time traveler, never quite sure who you're related to. Whom.

One of my good friends said that time travel needs it's own tenses, though I'm fairly sure we're not related. Well, we could be. Probably not.

[She looks at him curiously] I think you'd be a nice relative to have. You're friendly, and a time traveler.

Mm. [He rubs the back of his head, noncommittal.] Who're you? What's your name? Doesn't start with a G, does it?

Janie Louise Taylor, not a G in it anywhere. I'm a... traveler. Retired, mostly, so I visit lots of places and eat all the ice cream that I want. Who are you? [She grins again, and digs around in a pocket, looking for a business card.]

I don't seem to have a card on me, I'm sorry.

You have to retire to eat all the ice cream you want? Well. I've been retired since I was born.

[Feels around in the inner pocket of his leather jacket.] Here we are. [He pulls out a beaten-up, dog-eared card with a complicated series of letterpressed circles and lines, almost like an astrological chart, and offers it to her.] Pleasure to meet you, Janie Louise Taylor. I'm the Doctor.

I got so busy for a while that I did not have ice cream. I just worked, slept, and worked. I love ice cream... and when I quit, I decided that I could eat as much as I wanted. Work will go on without me. Retirement means different things to different people, I suppose.

[She accepts the card, and looks at it for a long moment] It's nice to meet you, 'The Doctor'. Are you actually a doctor of something, or is it your name? Is this a star chart? I don't think I recognize it.
