I don't know that you need to feel obligated to do anything special for me. It's not your wedding anniversary, and, technically, it's not mine either, as you've chosen to take me from a point in time where Bella isn't exactly keen on the idea of marrying me...

But, if you're so inclined to do something to nice for me regardless, my application for

amatomnes could accidentally find its way into the recycle bin. What a gift that would be, the freedom to choose whom I do - or, more precisely, don't - engage in unsavory relations with...

[Sigh.] No, I don't think there's any irony to be had in the fact that you will be submitting me to my...virtuous doom today. It's merely a cruel and unusual coincidence.

[With a great deal of effort, he's able to smile warmly at her.]

[He kneels, inviting her into his open arms. Come, little one, and let daddy make sure he didn't emotionally scar you with all that fancy adult talk.]

[There's no hesitation to rush into his arms. Not traumatized at all.]

[It doesn't matter that he's not married yet - to her it's already happened.]

[Exactly how much time has she been spending with Aunt Alice...? He scoops her up as soon as she's close enough. As smart as he knows her to be, perhaps she's still too young to understand... That's what he hopes, at least.]

[She knows enough to know that romantic dates should happen on anniversaries. As for understanding the rest of it...well, Nessie's not even going to go there.]

You just have to make it special in a way mommy will like. [Like their house.] It's supposed to be just for you and mommy.

[Yes, good, stay here with daddy.]

Yes...but I think she would like it if you came with us. That would make it special.

[Always. Okay no, one day she will grow up and leave but that's a ways off.]

You can always do something after I go to bed.

[Leave? What is this nonsense. Is this Jacob's influence? Does daddy need to teach him a lesson?

Suddenly he's choking, on air, and hiding his mortification in her hair.]

I may not have wanted to then, but it turned out to be a pretty good bargaining chip.

[Tread carefully, Bella, he's turning on the dazzle.] Does this mean I'm allowed to wish you a happy anniversary?

[She even said it first technically, and with a smile. Because counting the years they've spent together is way better than counting her birthdays had ever been.

The dazzling sure helps, too. Works like a charm, every time.]

No gifts, though.
