Aah! Mademoiselle! It has been far too long since we last spoke this way. I know you have missed our conversations and of course my company, and it's very fitting that a cinematic performance of Les Miserables should wake me from such a long sleep.

[ Grantaire snorts, a small eyeroll might not escape Francis' notice. ]

[ He was considering a comment about how there's nothing "vile" about England's grip lately (on hon hon hon!) but then he remembered how their last conversation about England went and he's none too excited to go there again. Thus, he will instead comment on France's rustiness! ]

[Still smiling. He admires the young man's skepticism and just takes it in stride.]

[ Those eyebrows are pretty far up now. And yet the words don't sound as... ridiculous as they normally would. They nearly ring of, can he believe it, truth? ]

I do wonder how you would be able to prove such a thing, Monsieur Bonnefoy, but I would not be entirely opposed to the possibility.

I admire a man who will insist on thinking for himself! [he claps Grantaire on the shoulder and laughs.] Now, I wouldn't show this to just anyone; only to those who hold a very special place in my heart. [Fictional or no. And it's not like he doesn't know he himself is fictional here anyway--so before this becomes a disaster of meta and existentialism, he simply turns his back and pulls his hair to the side.

Like a mirage or the way air shimmers in intense heat, it might feel to Grantaire like his eyes are playing tricks on him. At first the scar on the back of Francis' neck is invisible--but then it seems like with maybe a trick of the light, it catches the eye. It is an ugly thing made only by the stroke of a heavy blade which no man could survive even if his head and spine were in tact. The entire scar rings France's neck and he believes he need not explain its origins.

Those who died for him to bring about much needed change have earned openness from him. He can at least repay them with something; else he wouldn't have mentioned this at all.]

I think your definition of 'good' and mine differs slightly. [His tone is dry, as if one used to putting up with bothersome things, before he frowns at the other.]

No, he's usually just immature and impulsive, whereas you... you're troublesome. Especially for a busy mun. It takes a lot of time to deal with you on a regular basis, you know.

My mun is of the opinion that you would fit in well at the place I am at. I'm still considering the best way to test the touch to health property of that place, having another nation with a lack of concern for personal space will be counter-productive.

[ Grantaire stares in awe at the transformation of the skin, watching the scar appear on the man's skin. Immediately the words of the Revolution, told to him by his family and old friends, come to mind.

[ His French is quiet, a hand going over his mouth. How can such a thing be real? ]

[he produces a ribbon from one of his pockets and quietly ties his hair at the back of his neck. A sad but loving smile crosses his features and warms them.]

It's alright, my friend.

[France places his hands on Grantaire's shoulders; his smile, now a little less sad.]

[ Grantaire watches him with the ribbon, his mind still hardly believing this. He shakes his head a bit, then looks over at the hand and back at France. ]

No. [ Stepping back a little. ]

Do not call me your friend, monsieur. You are my country, but that is all.

[Francis blinks, then removes his hands and holds them up apologetically.]

Eh... That's alright, it's the way of things. [He waves a hand as if casually brushing away any possible conceived offense. He's still smiling but the warmth falters again and France's brows knit together.]

I wasn't a friend to my citizens, not as I should have been.

Why did you not help us? Do you have no influence at all?

[ Swallowing hard. ]
