I thought you would know better than to send me to one of such places, mun. I have many more important matters to attend to that simply can't be put off-- but then again, you are aware of that to begin with as well, aren't you? Even so, you seem to refuse to change your mind about any of this..

[ .. a sigh. ]

If there is truly no way to avoid it, then I suppose I'll just have to crush them as soon as possible to be able to move on once more. It can't be that difficult. The people currently in that place must just be types who haven't even fully put their mind to their goal if they haven't accomplished anything yet. [ Only Masako can insult a whole grou of people carelessly in one breath.. ]

Well, perhaps you're lucky, then. I'm sure she wouldn't have you do anything that was completely out of character. At least, not under ordinary circumstances. The odd, and potentially beneficial, thing is that they often feel the need for some reason if they would like us to behave in a manner in which we would normally not behave.

In this case, no doubt you would need others to work together with. Whether you admit it or not at first, interpersonal interaction is their intention in sending us to a place, and therefore it will happen. Although perhaps it implies also that the best way to go home would be to be completely obdurate and free of contact with others.

However, willpower sometimes doesn't come into it. There are often odd "events" that may occur, which give them sufficient justification to have us behave in any way. Something like magic mistletoe, for instance. Say we were to find a sprig of magical mistletoe compelling you to stand in a doorway until you kissed someone. Wouldn't that be interesting?

[smile!] I'm sure that will prove an interesting obstacle for them, Natsume-san.

May I ask, by the way, what is implicit in being the heir of the Natsume family? I apologize for my lack of information in that regard.

Indeed? And how long have you run this company, Natsume-san? What are the primary business lines? Have you close professional relationships with the chief suite of officers?

[all with a polite tone, of course.]

A reporter? Not at all. As another head of what I might modestly call a somewhat major 'organization', I'd say that the sentiment would be better expressed as a sort of professional curiosity.

In any case, I'm sure all those skills will serve you in good stead when it comes time to making friends with strangers.

It might come out that you might need to have a friend or two, though, mightn't it, Natsume-san? At least to get along well with your partner, as you mentioned, unless you think you could be effective without doing so.

[He shrugs.] Confidentiality might normally be something I would uphold about it, but I haven't found, in practice, that it has mattered in such a space like this. Some reticence might still be called for, though. Perhaps I can say that we represent some major resources, albeit in the hands of a small number of people, who are spread out internationally with the major purpose of confronting existential threats to our world.
