Unimpressed

First you throw me into a haunted house and are gleefully awaiting to sign me up for experimentation. I've tolerated this nonsense, but a servant to elves, fae, whatever is just going to far. I trust you aren't actually serious about this and I will not have to point out the number of reasons why this is a bad idea. However in case you need some reminding I will bring up the best point: are you certain selecting me from a period when I'm less than stable is ideal?

Yes I realize you're so very interested in toying with my mentality while in the throes of memory loss and subjugation, but I hope you understand that I am not.

[ No, he's not saying all of this while sharpening the Masamune to imply any sort of threat - not at all. In fact he seems perfectly calm (too calm). ]

I - don't get her started. There some nonsensical thought about how it could - [BIG stress there, Zack. ] - be different depending on how soon and in what order my memories are regained.

[ Because y'know that's important when considers world destruction due to an overactive messiah complex. ]

Why is memory loss even on the table?

[ He doesn't want to explain this since explaining might make it a possibility. Then he reminds himself that it will either happen or it won't. ]

There is - apparently - this new game in which I would start off with only one memory. She seems to think that concept and the game set up would prove interesting testing grounds. Apparently dealing with ghosts, monsters, and creatures that could potentially perform vivisection while I'm still awake in this Maison place isn't enough of a test.

[ He noticed you sharpening Masamune over there; he kind of doesn't blame you if you'd like two. ]

[ He thinks about that offer for quite a bit. ]

If you choose, I would suggest Maison. [ Since he won't be potentially two steps away from boarding the crazy train. ] This other place and her plans would likely prove - unpleasant.

[And he's presented more than enough of that in Zack's life as it is. Which might be the reason he looks back at the sword. ]

Even if my AU self wont' know you at first.

[ Oh, but Sephiroth. If you're going somewhere there's going to be trouble, you know he's going to worry. ]

I'm kind of concerned about that other place.

[ And dealing with a Sephiroth that flat-out doesn't know him seems daunting as well. Still. ]

...My mun's been considering Maison. [ A beat. ] I'm not really sure how that would work.

Zack –

[ He’s not exactly sure how to put this if only because he doesn’t actually want to consider that this might become a reality – sort of. ]

She’s considering taking me from after my second return.

[ The remnants, the Geostigma. Sephiroth is certain he doesn’t need to explain just how spectacularly bad that will likely go. ]

I couldn’t in good conscious ask that of you.

[ Oh.

Well, that takes the wind out of his sails quite a bit. Even so, he doesn't really like the idea of his friend being tormented -- crazy version or not.

Awkwardly, he rubs the back of his head. ]

So...a haunted house, huh?

[ Oh indeed, and he doesn’t much share his mundane’s enthusiasm at the thought of seeing whether or not he’ll turn into a vengeful, lay waste to everything around him, entity again. He won’t speak on that. With Fair’s incredibly optimistic nature Sephiroth won’t risk giving the younger man hope in what the General is certain will be a doomed plan.

Instead he smirks. ]

She’s rather fond of the place. So far it hasn’t been terrible, just very strange.

[ He makes a thoughtful sound. ]

I might end up there.

[ His player has thought of it often enough. ]

It'll be kind of weird seeing you younger than me, though.

I have no doubts that it will be incredibly strange for the both of you - us - [ How does one address that anyway?] But I think the two of you will get a long well. He's less hesitant than I when it comes to people.

You're not that bad with people.

[ A little awkward sometimes, maybe, but Zack thinks Sephiroth turned out pretty well, all things considered. Being a lab baby certainly couldn't have been fun. ]

...does that mean he'll laugh at my jokes?

[ Most important question. ]

[ He appreciates Zack's rather generous (in his opinion) view. ]

Possibly, but I won't make any promises.

[ In whatever universe, he's still Sephiroth. ]

I'll take it!

[ Challenge accepted. ]

[ While it's faint, nearly undetectable, Sephiroth cracks a smile. Zack's enthusiasm always has had a contagious factor in it. ]

Try to stay out of trouble. It will, it seems, just be the two of you. Although things change with startling rapidity.

[ But see, he knows you by now, Sephiroth. He takes that tiny smile as a victory in itself. ]

I'm very good at staying out of trouble, I'll have you know.

[ If anything, it finds him. That's totally not his fault!! ]

I know what you mean.

[ Things seem to change on a dime in one of the places he's at -- that's what happens when a lot of people are in the same place from different times. ]

[ Wow that is one skeptical look he's wearing now, Zack. But why bring up the past ~~since his is HIGHLY checkered~~? ]

It will sort one way or another.

[ And he hopes not with fire, but he's feeling (and rightly so he feels!) a touch pessimistic about that. ]

[ Hey, hey, his claim is perfectly legit!!! ~~The years when he was a bratty teenager don't count.~~ ]

Probably.

[ A small pause, then- ]

Good to see you, man.

[ ~~Oh they so count!~~

But he isn't expecting to hear that - at all - despite Zack's mother-henning tendencies. ]

It's - good to see you as well. [ And he does mean that. ] Thank you.

[ And he doesn't mean for what Zack just said. The younger Soldier had tried, for all three of them, to make things right. Sephiroth hasn't forgotten even if it had been lost for awhile. ]

[ ~~Do not!!!!~~

It's not so much his mother-henning tendencies that inspired the comment, but rather a sort of conscious determination to appreciate the time he does have with his friend. What happened in Nibelheim hurt him a great deal, but it just makes him remember and value Sephiroth the man that much more.

The 'thank you' does puzzle him a bit, though. ]

[ The man: there are times Sephiroth wonders if the man ever existed. Which really was the ShinRa construct?

Yes very pessimistic. ]

More than you should have had to do.

[ As far as Zack is concerned, Sephiroth is his own entity -- shaped by circumstances, maybe, but what person isn't?

If he had grown up in Gongaga with Zack's mom, maybe Sephiroth would have been like Zack!

He thinks, maybe, he knows what Sephiroth means, now. He smiles, just a little. ]

I'm not complaining.

[ Not to complain about that anyway; it isn't Zack's nature. Sephiroth looks at the younger man, impassive as he nearly always is, and yet - ]

You are the best of us.

[ Of him, Angeal, and Genesis, of what SOLDIER 1st Class should have been. Nor is it a question of blame as such, he's long since moved past that and really dying three times and finally having his mind completely his own again gives a person perspective. ]

[ Ahhh, Sephiroth. Way to punch him right in the feels, there. His smile fades. ]

There are things I could have done better.

[ Like not leave you alone in that damn basement. Still- ]

...Thank you.

[ The next look he bends upon Fair is softly reproving though he does nod in acknowledgement of Zack's gratitude. ]

You couldn't have known what none of us did. ShinRa hoped we would end it quickly and quietly so their secrets would stay safely hidden away. [ Angeal, Genesis, and Hollander swept clean away without a ripple. ] You have no fault there, Zack.

[ Zack shakes his head. The mess with Hollander, Genesis, and Angeal -- he doesn't really think there's anything more he could have done about that. Genesis's mind was degrading with the rest of him, and Angeal refused to listen.

Sephiroth, though... ]

I should have stayed with you.

[ .... And done what while Sephiroth had been in throes of quietly losing his own mind? He'd already rejected Genesis, refused to save the man he'd called friend. Would anything have made a difference after that? ]

Hindsight is not always perfect. I was not - myself.

[ Would he have listened? Could he have listened to anything but the voice offering him the one thing Sephiroth had ever truly wanted? (Or thought he wanted. Losing Angeal and Genesis had shaken him more than he cared to admit.) Yet he does not entirely dismiss what Zack says because it doesn't come from a place of arrogance but out of genuine desire to help. ]

[ Talked to him. Read over what Sephiroth was looking at with him, even if only the barest facts made sense to him (he's no science whiz, and doesn't claim to be). Made him eat, made him drink, made him sleep -- something to keep his friend's mind from fracturing to the extent it had.

Another presence, at least, might have been somewhat grounding. There's really no way to know. ]

I know.

[ That doesn't meant he doesn't think about what might have been. ]

[ Zack's strange, quiet insistence is both touching and exasperating. ]

I think, given everything, you have no reason to regret your actions, Zack, even if the circumstances still inspire it.

[ He kind of has a knack for that.

A small smile tugs at the corner of his mouth. ]

Well, I would have to be entirely reasonable then, wouldn't I?

[ And rational. Zack, however, is neither of those things. ]

How about practical?

[ He's (usually) a fan of practical. ]

Never heard of it!

[ Yes, he has. Zack, you dork. ]

[ There is nothing really he can say to that, but it's nice none-the-less to know that some things (Zack Fair) haven't changed. ]

[ The face is irresistible. c:
