It just seems like something Quentin would do, and that's never nice.

I didn't say it was nice, only why she would do it.

[But aren't you supposed to be nice to people you like? People are so confusing.]

Well, for the record, Mr. Wilson was trying to be helpful when he gave me those magazines. He wasn't making a joke. I think. It's hard to tell with him.

He might have been. Have you asked him, sir?

It's been awhile since I've seen him. [He's pretty sure assassins aren't supposed to show up at school unless they're, y'know, the headmaster.]

I think it was a genuine sentiment, though. I've been told I need to enjoy things a bit more.

Do you have problems enjoying things? [She looks at him, a bit confused.] I could loan you some of my books if that would help.

You have books on enjoying things? [He looks really intrigued at this.]

His point was that I spend too much time reading and thinking about how I should do things and not enough just enjoying myself. I think.

I have two. They're supposed to be self-help books. I wouldn't mind loaning them to you.

Well, what kind of things would you like to do?

I'd like that, thank you.

Well, I want to be a great hero, but I'm still in training for that. I haven't played baseball in a while, but it's a bit different playing games at school. Everyone uses their powers and soon the field is on fire.

It's no problem. I've already read them, after all, so it's no big deal.

Oh, so you have superpowers, then? I don't, but I've read all about them. I can imagine they make playing normal games difficult. If you'd be so kind as put up with me, I wouldn't object to playing baseball with you, sir.

We can play games normally, but no one wants to. Everyone's so competitive.

That'd be great! I know I have a glove and ball somewhere.

I'm not very competitive. But no one wants to play with me because everyone thinks I'm weird. It's been a long time since someone's played anything with me.

I don't express emotions well. And I'm a paranormal investigator. People don't like either of those things. I've been bullied a bit.

Investigating the paranormal sounds interesting to me. Do you help people in need or is it scientific curiosity?

I help people. Just like my father did before me. But nobody believes me when I fight chupacabras or doppelgangers or other things like that. I'm from a world where people just don't believe in that.

Wow. I can't imagine a world without doppelgangers.

That must be pretty tough. Does your dad help?

[temerated]

My dad was killed by a vampire when I was six. I took up paranormal investigation after that.

[greatestheroever]

I'm sorry. That was very brave of you, though.

[temerated]

I'm not crying, am I? I was always punished for that; I'm trying to make sure I don't get back into the habit.

You should be able to cry! It's still brave if you cry. Sometimes the world gives us a lot to cry about.

If I cry, people think I'm crazy. People always think I am. So I make sure not to.

You could cry when they're not around, I guess. But I won't think you're crazy.
