Sometimes it's best to expect the worse.

I'm usually the one that does, but in this case I thought I'd try and calm her. Then of course she had to go and talk to her friend about me, and now she's happy, and I'm wishing I hadn't said anything.

[Mary knew it was coming, she just hoped her mun would keep being lazy.]

Shouldn't worry too much about it kiddo. Things happen.

I'll worry about it less once I've gotten her to change her mind. [She smiles a little; no one's ever called her kiddo, and instead of being insulted, she's actually a little pleased.]

[He doesn't see why no one would.] Nice to meet you Mary, name's Jason Brody.

Nice to meet you too. [She holds out a hand if he wants to shake.] Is your mun sending you to a game, or just throwing you into memes? [Because she thinks the latter is probably better than private storylines. Maybe.]

[He will give her hand a small shake.] Right now I'm just kind of being tossed around. What about you?

She's been thinking of maybe tossing me into a dressing room she's in, but she's already got two others there, so she's not sure. Mostly it's just a storyline she has running with a friend of her's. Kind of a reboot of an old game they were in once.

[Mary wants to make the biggest face ever, she really does. Instead she just takes her hand back and pushes her hair out of her eyes.] They decided since I was so desperate for family acceptance the first time, they'll give it to me now.

Well good luck with all of that then. Big moves can be hard on a kid your age.

It's good you worry about your mun getting sleep. A lot of people here are so mean-spirited to their muns, it's ridiculous.

She comes up with bad ideas when she doesn't get enough rest, so it's in my best interest. That and someone should look out for her.

Even if it's in people's best interests, a lot of people here are still really mean to their muns. It's rude if you ask me.

Oh, um, pardon me, I forgot my manners. Viviana Umbridge, fifth year Hufflepuff. And you are...?

You should see when Jaren needs to get her attention, he calls her 'Hey you'. Then again, he has issues. [She's not trying to be mean saying that; Jaren's her friend. He's just terminally strange.]

Mary Catherine Malfoy, third year Ravenclaw. [She grins a bit and holds out a hand.]

Mary Catherine's a lovely name. [She shakes the other girl's hand a bit timidly, but manages a smile.] I wasn't smart enough for Ravenclaw, I'm afraid, but I've heard they're a nice House.

Thanks. It's all my mother calls me, but everyone else usually calls me Mary. Or in my friend Rain's case, Mary Child. [She rolls her eyes a little, still smiling, before taking her hand back. She noticed the timidness, and hopes it's not anything she said.]

I'm not sure I'm smart enough for it either, but the Hat wanted to put me in Slytherin. I didn't really feel like following tradition. [Nevermind that prior to her mother, that side of the family had been mostly Gryffindors.]

Hufflepuff's not bad either, I know a few people from that House.

It sounds dignified. A bit long, but 'Viviana Corrine' doesn't sound good together by comparison... oh! I know, you can go by Mary Catherine when you're older and have some kind of job. Like a professional name. My mun's mother does that.

The hat was pretty sure I was a Hufflepuff. I guess I'm not as multi-faceted as you. [Yeah, she puts herself down a lot. Without hesitation.]

Viviana Corrine sounds pretty. Sometimes I think mine sounds like a nun's name. Oh, maybe...I want to be an Auror though, so it might be a little weird. Then again, maybe not. [The put-down surprises Mary, and she frowns.] Nothing wrong with where you are. Lot of loyal, hardworking people there.

I want to be a healer at St. Mungo's. I don't think I'm brave enough to be an Auror. But yeah, I guess Auror's don't need professional names, since you're already pretty impressive if you get in that field.

I know. I just... well, my mother was hoping I'd get into her House. Lots of parents do, it's just how things work. But I guess I just fit into Hufflepuff better, according to the Sorting Hat.

Being a Healer's pretty brave in itself, I think. Plus you seem kind enough. Well, I'm hoping I can do it on my merits and not my family name. I actually try pretty hard to avoid that. [Unless she's trying to scare someone harassing her friends, then why not.]

...She's pretty disappointed, isn't she? My father was. Just another sign that my mother and dad failed at raising me. I'd rather not be a horrid git, actually. [Mary gives Viviana a gentle smile.] Being different's not bad.

It's just what I want to do. I feel like it's what I'm meant to be doing. And I know my mother has a few little Ministry connections, so she could get me a job there, but I don't... I'm just not good enough for that kind of job.

She is. I guess it's not just me, though. I mean, lots of us have that problem.
