There are books you could read, friends you could make to tell you and such things like that. I'm sure there is a bard or two running around here somewhere with a story to tell.
Stories like I said and present yourself as frightening. A lot of how people view you does come from your appearance but throwing on an old black robe and speaking in a frightening manner can do the trick in a lot of cases.
