I'm sorry, did you say I couldn't handle Sergeant Calhoun?

Because I'm pretty sure you've forgotten who you're talking to.

I should get points for supporting you, despite my objections.

[If she allows him to think it is, he's going to try it on every humanoid enemy! And then they'll have uncontrolled space herpes on the Enterprise, DO YOU WANT THAT JIM?]

Go on then- What girl doesn't live for surprises?

[NOT YET YOU DON'T! She has total faith in your ability to catch them ♥]

...

[She presses her mouth together in a thin flat line. She's not sure if she wants to laugh in his face, email him a fake sexual harassment claim to sign off on, or start hoping if she just tries hard enough he'll burst into flame from her glare alone]

That wasn't an invitation to keep trying. [Just in case. JIM YOU MAKE IT SO HARD TO JUSTIFY LIKING YOU] I was hoping 'half your tricks' might consist of something a little more...Combat oriented. I should have known better.

You have never asked me to do that.

[Her mouth, it twitches. The same way it always does when he does something that she shouldn't be smiling about, and totally wants to] If that were true, not even having the flagship posting would convince me to work under you.

[That word choice? Utterly deliberate. Can you resist the temptation to run with that opening?]

[Predictable. She rolls her eyes sharply, even as she's laughing on the inside] I don't think it would have affected your strategy any.

[There aren't even any points for effort. Go ahead and keep trying though, being rejected is good for you. She's taking one for the proverbial team]

Your track record says otherwise.

[Let's just conveniently ignore the fact that he hasn't changed tactics with her because it is at least marginally effective. If she really hadn't ever wanted to deal with him, she wouldn't have even bothered humouring him- Even if it was just to be insulting]

[Sure, some of it is that he shocks her with his nerve, that she can't help but be amused by the fact that he goes forward fully expecting it to work- That rules and social norms and reality will just bend because he asks it to.

It's really in all the things he doesn't say. He asked after her focus, but made no disparaging comments on the shortness of her regulation skirt. Talked about her transmission- Not that he'd managed to watch her partially undress. He trusted her ability to translate and to admit it when called upon. He's earned moments of her time and if he wants to make a game out of his persistence, she supposes he's put in the time and effort to earn it. Along with smushier feelings like respect but she's allergic to admitting it
]

That's what you call working? What exactly was the outcome you were hoping for?

[There's that smile] So it's a competition?

[She likes to quibble over word choices, associations- But she's not exactly offended by the connotation. She doesn't think that he's serious, or that he even gave thought to how to spin it out of context. She thinks it's fitting, thinks that's where all the appeal is for him. In chasing after her with no discernible finish line- And therefore no consequences. If she were to respond positively one day, "So you should take me to dinner.", she thinks if he didn't immediately run screaming in the opposite direction, the interest would be lost]

But for the record? Slow and steady worked for the turtle, Kirk. You're a snail.

[You go any slower and she'll let you use her first name when you're forty ]

[Really, Jim?]

No. Not everything, Captain.
