[ Damian stops short, his brows twisting in confusion. ]

[ Too young to be worrying about women? Tt. He crosses his arms. ] I'm not worried about women. I never will be. They're distractions who are, more often than not, utterly useless to me. But I have eyes, and I see no reason for them to be needlessly offended if I can help it.

[ She's about to protest, but then she realizes what she's about to say and snorts. ]

I dated Tim from the time I started the Spoiler gig pretty much until last year. [ Off and on, dead and alive, it's complicated. ] So you'd probably say both.

You know there are plenty of flowers and trees if you're really that offended by the female form.

[ He crosses his arms. He would say both, actually, and it bothers him a little that she beat him to it. Not that he'd ever say so, of course. ]

Why would I be interested in flowers and trees?

Do they allow fighting, at least?

[ Seriously, though, why would he be interested in flowers? ]

Because they're pretty? Or are you only attracted to knives? [ She wouldn't honestly be surprised. ]

Tt. [It's difficult for him to say more than that, though, seeing as how one of his favorite possessions is his katana. Instead, he chooses to focus on what else she says.]

That's at least one thing we have in common. I don't take orders well.

Are you saying that you'd fight, too, if you agreed with the cause?

I know you'll fight, Brown. I'm asking about circumstances. Not if you think it's right, but if you agree with the cause. Only a fool would think they're always the same thing.

I took up with Batman and Robin didn't I? I didn't always get what they were about but I knew it was something bigger and better than myself.

[He glances at her and smirks, but it only lasts a moment before he looks away.]

You didn't fit in with the new universe anyway.

[That isn't what he wanted to say. But he can't tell her what he really wanted to say. He can't bear to let anyone - even Stephanie - think he's weak. And he still isn't completely on board with the "emotions aren't weakness" idea.]

[ Her lip twitches, maybe a smile, maybe a grimace, maybe a little of both. It settles into a look of knowing resolve. ]

I'm there, Damian. You just don't know it yet.

[ Damian is tempted to roll his eyes but manages to restrain himself, instead looking surlier. ]

Doing what? A whole lot of nothing? Are you undercover somewhere as a nobody?

[ Because the Stephanie he knows would never settle for standing aside and watching other people do the work. Not that he'll tell her he thinks that, either. She might rightly take it as a compliment, and he doesn't want her to think he thinks well of her. A gesture of respect, fine. Arranging what he thinks might be good surprises for her, fine. After all, she'd taught him about moon walking, and he would never forget that. But being nice in person? He's not ready for people to think he's like that. ]

Something awesome, I'm sure.

[ She has no clue. She's heard Things, different things from different groups. But even if they really truly never bring her back into continuity ~~like Ted Kord~~ she knows she exists. And she knows who she is. And if her dad didn't kill her in this universe then she's got to be making the world a better place somehow. ]

I can help without being Batgirl, you know. There was life before vigilantism.

Tt. What did you do? Babysit? Watch TV?

[ From what Damian has seen of normal lives, they're either flat-out terrible or terribly boring. He doesn't understand the appeal at all. ]

Before vigilantism? I went to school. Did a bit of gymnastics. If Dad hadn't been an issue I'd probably teach. Maybe open a clinic. I dunno, something like that.

[ He isn't interested. Because this is Stephanie Brown, and if it gets around that he likes girls like Stephanie Brown, then he can throw away his chances of dating worthwhile women out the window. Not that he thinks about dating. But he believes in keeping his options open. Maybe he can convince them that she's a charity case. ]

What kind of clinic?

You've met Leslie Thompkins, right? She saved my life more than once. I'd like to think maybe I could do the same, even without a mask.

Oh. I thought you would have been a vet or something. Then you could talk to living things without bothering real human beings.

I like people. No offense to dogs, but I can barely keep a plant alive.

Maybe you should stick to something you can actually do. I hear the service industry is always looking for people.
