Mlle. Fantine. [The guilt is crushing now that Eponine knows what the life the woman's lead is like. And she isn't even sure why she's guilt but ow, it hurts.] It is good to see you again.

( oh, yes. eat that guilt up. except .. this isn't your fault, Eponine. none of this is your fault. you are your parent's daughter, but we do not choose which family we are born into in life. you cannot always choose your path, just the various turns you take.

[Her faint smile is both sad and bitter. She's used to being blamed and assumes Fantine blames her just as much as her parents. Eponine wouldn't fault her for doing so.]

Not a lady, mademoiselle. [Never a lady.] And...yes. In a way. She is well, I have seen her in this place. Perhaps you will see her too.

[And they'll be happy like they deserve to be, and how she clearly does not.]

( Fantine had never claimed any great intelligence, but she did not lay blame where it was not wanted. Eponine had done better under the circumstances that had broken many. she could not hate her for that, or blame her. nor could she blame her for the unfair treatment that Cosette had experienced as a child; she could only blame herself. )

( nothing good had happened to Fantine recently. not for a long time. seeing her child again would be a great kindness indeed. )

That's .. wonderful. ( so monsieur mayor had kept his word, had told the truth and took care of her child. Cosette was taken care of. she wanted for nothing. she knew kindness. ) How long ago was that?
