It is my birthday tomorrow. Two years to the day since I first came into my heritage as an Old One and stopped the first rising of the Dark.

I really don't find all this talk about the world ending tonight amusing at all.

[He's half tempted to tease, but only the faintest hint of that is in his eyes as he looks at Will.]

Do not fear, Old One. Men merely enjoy having a sense of finality to their lives. Of knowing when it will end. The both of us know better.

[Will simply stops and stares for a long moment. Then he's grinning happily with the widest smile he's had in months.]

Merriman! It's so marvelous to see you again.

[Merriman chuckles quietly for him.]

I hear you have been quite busy since last we met.

Somewhat, I should say. [But the reply is cheerful.] The castle seems to insist on my presence, although I do not know my purpose there yet.

Give it some more time. I imagine you'll discover it soon enough.

Wait for the proper time, is it?

As it ever has been. Yes.

[Will had thought as much. All the same, he had to admit that he sometimes found waiting and watching for all these months to be very trying. The patience of a boy was not nearly as long as the patience of an Old One, after all.]

Then it is up to me to watch and wait.

[Oh he knows this. Merriman allows the ghost of a grin to appear again.]

You will do well, Watcher.

[Will smiles fondly. He had missed this. It was one thing to think that he was doing the right thing. It was another thing entirely to be able to hear the reassurance from Merriman.]

I'm sure I shall. I know my duty, here.

And you? Have you and the others been doing well?

[Sometimes a little reassurance goes a long way.]

Everyone is well. They send you their regards and well wishes.

I'm glad. [It would be a very long time before he would be able to see any of them for himself.]

I do not know how one celebrates where you are from and the passing of simply one year is not remarkable where I am from .. but I wish you a very happy day all the same.

[The boy smiles fondly.] At home it was mostly a day for family. We all celebrated by coming together for a meal. It won't be possible this year, of course. But then it doesn't mean as much it once did. Two years ago it was a very important day indeed.

Perhaps you could have a meal with all of your new friends here?

Perhaps. I wouldn't really want to bother everyone.

If you explained the reason, I don't see how anyone could believe that to be a bother.

I doubt anyone would think so. And perhaps that is enough of a reason in itself.

But there is no need to worry. I am quite happy with everything as it is. After all, I've already gotten my birthday wish.

And what was that, young one?

For snow. Not just a dusting like we usually got at home, but a proper thick blanket of it.

I'm glad, then, that wish was fulfilled.

I'm sure it won't end. It can't and if something evil plans to end the world, good will stop it.

Of course it won't end. The Dark cannot rise again, for it has been cast out beyond all space and time.
