[ Darkness flares, and in the span of moments, both of them are engulfed in the depths of eternal night. ]

[ he tensed slightly, but didn't jump or move. This was old hat. He wasn't scared of the darkness--he'd wield both. ]

If that's all you have, gotta say... I'd give this experiment an F.

[ Xigbar just smiles. ]

[ And it's there, with that last emphasis, that whatever 'ground' Riku may have been standing on gives way.

He's falling, hurtling through space with an ever-increasing velocity, and Xigbar's form shrinks in the distance as gap widens between them. ]

[ his stomach lurches and at first, he tries to scramble to not fall--but there's no way he can. this is Xigbar's element--and this was probably one of his... more questionable ideas.

with a hiss, he summons his Keyblade. falling through space isn't scary--thrilling, more like. ]

[ Thrilling, perhaps, until it comes to a jarring halt.

The impact is sudden, and when Riku tries to get up, he'll find there's nothing to see but black, and that there are invisible walls on every side.

It won't be long either before they start to shrink. ]

[ whoa--pain shoots all the way through his legs as he near-stumbles, landing on the soles of his feet. that aches.

... walls?

and then, a quick step backward, as they start to shrink. alright, while he may not be scared, he's not exactly very pleased by this turn of events. doesn't matter. he'll still get through this. ]

[ Yes, walls. And they keep on shrinking even there's no real material to them -- just space he's manipulating on the sly.

Unless Riku discovers a way to slice through space itself, a crushing force will start bearing down on him hard. ]

Sounds like you're showing off a little.

[ while Riku already knows what he thinks of Roxas--it's positive, really, just... awkward. previous encounters has made him wary. ]

Jack's the one trailing him, allegedly being a Guardian by doing so. he'd thought that 1) he shouldn't get involved, since he was just passing through, and 2) that even if he did get involved, there was nothing that could happen to him--nothing Pitch could do--that was any worse than what Ansem or Xehanort had done. if he could survive that, couldn't he survive everything?

but Roxas had a point. he had to expect the unexpected; he couldn't think in that frame of mind anymore. there could always be something worse. ]

Huh. You actually listened to me. [Roxas raises an eyebrow. He's not exactly surprised, but...well, okay, maybe he is just a little bit.]

You've gotta watch out for yourself. Especially when there are people around who'd miss you if anything happened.

[ browraise. ] Do people not usually listen to you?

... [ oh, right. the whole missing thing. he scratches his cheek awkwardly. ] Right. [ more like I need to be around to protect them, but hey--same thing, right? ]

[He lets out a little snort.] Do they ever?

Besides, you should know. "Shut up, how many times do I have to beat you—" Any of that ring a bell? I shouldn't have bothered to say anything to you for all the good it did.

and that ouch is justly deserved, Riku knows that above all. his expression goes from pain to regret to shame and self-hate before he forces himself to hold back. it takes careful measure to speak; ]

[Conversely, Roxas more or less keeps a poker face. As if he really didn't have a heart.

That's the thing. I actually believe you.

[He lets out half a laugh, but doesn't sound all that amused.]

It'd be a lot easier if I could just hate you and be done with it.

[ ... Roxas, lookit--you've actually made Riku a little speechless. mostly because he didn't think he'd believe him--

but also because he's thought something along the same lines. maybe if he had only ever thought of Roxas as a means to get Sora to wake up, if he'd only thought of him as nothing more than a piece of the puzzle, it wouldn't hurt him nearly as much as it had.

but he can't. Roxas is a person--not only that, he is his own person, and Riku can't stop thinking that even if he tries. ]

[Their worlds are full of what-ifs and if-onlys. If things were different, maybe they'd even be able to bond over that and understand each other a little more.

But things have never been that easy for either of them. Roxas knows that much even if he doesn't really know as much as he should about his other half's best friend.]

[ he chokes out a little laugh, bracing his hand against his head as he runs his fingers through his hair. ]

What am I supposed to say? I spent more than a year hating myself [ and he still does, on occasion ] twice as much as I probably should've, because I thought you would.

Is that supposed to make me feel bad for you?

[There's a middle ground somewhere between hating and making friends. That's about where Roxas is.]

Like I said. I wish I did.

No, you-- [ you were the one that wanted me to talk. he frowns, feeling distinctly uncomfortable as this goes on. ]

[He holds the hard look a moment or two longer before it softens and he looks away.]

But I guess...you can't be part of a heart like Sora's and hate anyone.

[More to the point, Roxas knows his best friend will do anything for him. He's already given everything he has.]

And maybe I got to know Sora a little from the inside, so I get why him. Even if it was more like dreaming.

That doesn't mean I think it's okay.

I can guarantee that he would not be difficult to destroy if I have to.

[ his eyebrows raise. ]
