And you can't count on your little theory being anything resembling reality. What part of this story has ever been predictable?

Who says it doesn't register? [His voice is quiet and serious. Whatever else is going on, he's not lying.] There's a reason I'd rather work with you.

But I'm used to casualties. Hazard of my job. If that's what has to happen, I'll live with it.

Nothing has to happen. People make things happen - you're choosing it. Don't you dare try and absolve yourself of responsibility for this.

I've been working towards this for 300 years. I can't choose differently.

Letting go would be a lot easier than all the work involved in holding onto this. Besides, I'm not even saying you have to just ... give up on your revenge. But don't let it consume you to the point where you're leaving collateral damage behind.

And that justifies hurting people? [ she shakes her head. ] That's not an excuse.
