Yeah, that was a mistake. Get them thinking about how you not surviving might be even more entertaining, and you'll really be in trouble.

I don't really believe in fate. I'd rather make my own decisions.

Trying to survive for the entertainment of others? That sounds terrible! That's just as bad as the Mamodo Battles!

It certainly isn't a good time, I can say from experience.

I've never heard of Mamodo Battles before, though.

It's an ongoing fight between 100 demons where they bond with humans to fight one another and the last one standing becomes their king. It's really painful. I speak from my experience.

I'm...just someone who got lucky. The people I had to kill aren't. That's all it is. It isn't cool.

[ she's quiet for a minute. ]

That's disgusting.

[ she isn't sure she really believes in demons, but whatever this girl endured is still awful. She can't be that old, by the look of her. ]

Oh, you killed people too, huh? You're right: that's not cool at all. Who enjoys that crap?

The bond that a human could form with their partner isn't disgusting. What's disgusting is that they have to be torn apart eventually.

I don't know. Some people do, I guess.

[ she's not even going to touch this demon thing. ]

No. Being forced to fight to the death is disgusting no matter what. I understand wars happen. But that kind of thing shouldn't happen for the entertainment of others.

But the mamodo aren't forced to fight to the death. Their rules say they have to fight each other in order for a new king to be decided, some even want to do so, and it's not to the death: it's until one mamodo burns another one's spellbook that the human partner reads from, and that sends them back to their world. Oh, and it's not for anyone's entertainment.

And believe me, a mamodo demon and a human can form a strong connection with each other depending on the individuals. Like me and Nya.

[ Now she's confused. ]

It still sounds...pretty unnecessary to me. I don't go in for that kind of senseless violence.

[ She's had too much of it to be won over on this. ]

Neither do I. I freaking hated that battle. I only fought hard to keep Nya with me, so we WOULDN'T have to fight and Nya wouldn't ever have to go back. We could stay together forever, like family. But...

[Shion just turns away and sighs]
