See, but this is good. Maybe. Don't you like making friends better than enemies? I do, at least. And I would rather focus on that than on people who get mad at you for trying to defend me.

I mean, in a way, they're right. What does it matter? You're always going to look after me and they're always going to be...well. Whatever they are. As long as you have my back, it's not like they can actually hurt me. Duh.

I didn't want to! [Victor frowns] I was just worried people were going to take him away again.

[He's really tempted to ask, but instead. The story.] Edgar was this kid in school. He and I were kind of...loners. Anyway Edgar found out about Sparky...and he told me to tell him how to do it...or he'd tell about what I did.

[Victor looks ashamed] so I did and a bunch of other kids tried to recreate it...and they brought back all their pets but they weren't like Sparky. One destroyed our Dutch Days festival.

[Poor Tashi] ...and the weird girl's cat...he became a vampire and he kidnapped Elsa...annnd he held her and her dog in the windmill until it sort of burnt down and sparky had to save them.

[And now he's waiting for the skepticism, the scorn, the disbelief.]

Oh. [Funny, how easy something good can turn into such a wave of something awful. Does every strange, lonely kid have a story like that? The wrinkled look on her face might seem a little skeptical, but...]

I'm sorry. Poor Sparky. I mean, and you. That's...cats can really become vampires?

[Sparky, spotting a fly, leaps for it and eats it with a satisfied snap. It buzzes out of a hole in his skin a moment later.

Everyone's got a story. Victor just sighs.]

I don't know. We never got a chance to figure it out. It was like...you ever watch any of the old black and white horror movies on TV?

[Said the black and white boy.]

[Giggling, she puts her hand in the fly's path and lets it buzz around her fingers then, once it's gone, scritches Sparky around the little opening it escaped from.]

Oh, sure! I love antique horror movies. I have a hyper-ton on VHS!

[Sparky lets out a happy noise before settling in and staring up at her, before rolling over to sleep.]

Did you ever see "Godzilla" Or "The Fly?" or... "The Thing?"

Godzilla, sure! I like Mothra, a little better, but. [She shrugs, wrinkles her nose.] I'll always pick bugs over anything that's going to eat them.

[Sparky kicks out his legs and Victor tucks his knees up to his chin.] I can understand that. I always picked...sparky over everybody else.

You're lucky to have each other, it sounds like. [Smile.]

[Sparky crawls over and rolls onto his back beside Victor. He is deep in doggy dreamland.] ...He probably needs a recharge.

[Stare] what? ...oh. Do you have pets?

[Head-shake.] Oh, no. My dad says... [Wince. Bad habits die hard.] Said. Well. I used to have health problems. He used that as his reason to never let me keep anything. Sparky was the first dog I've ever seen!

[Victor's eyes go wide] ...What?! ...No way. That's..

[Sparky's tail wags and he'll just,roll over on his back more, paws in the air]

Your dad sounds seriously lame...Seriously. Does that mean you'd never...I mean you've seen a cat right?

[Looking down to play with Sparky's paws, Shilo lets her wig sort of fall in front of her face to hide the blush.]

He was hyper-lame.

I've seen...pictures. I guess that doesn't really count, though, does it?

[Victor grins and shrugs.] No. I'd offer to introduce you to one, by the only person who had one was weird girl and Mr. Whiskers wasn't even...

He wasn't even a good cat. Well I mean I guess he was, but... He was weird.

[Sparky's tail wags and he bats at her hands. YES ATTENTION.]

Oh. I guess I thought cats were supposed to be nice.

[She puts her hand on Sparky's belly and gives him a pat.] ...It's probably good I can't meet him.

You know who I bet you would like? Elsa. And Persephone.

[Sparky sits up and barks] Persephone is a poodle.

[Sparky is now looking for persephone, up and barking and running circles around them]
