You continue to disappoint me, mundane. Your high-minded ideas of progress and change were what led to our separation, and simply because you're fond gives you no excuse to simply pull me out for your own amusement.

I'm a busy man, and I have no time for your whims. If you want to do something, then take initiative, rather than simply occupying my time with nonsense. If you had a plan, then perhaps we could speak on this further. Until then, I have more pressing matters to attend to.

We got some "fantastic" around here, I guess. But it comes and goes.

I'm sure that can be found anywhere, if you look hard enough. It's hard to ignore the fantastic when humanity's last altercation was with another race from beyond the stars.

What?

Where I'm from, you see, we're in the middle of a war with something from the darkest reaches of the galaxy. Before we discovered interplanetary travel, everything was entirely normal, we would have never known there was anything out there if we hadn't found ruins on Mars.

If you didn't know they were there, why are you at war with them now?

Because. They're at war with all life, and have been for millennia.

Weren't they leaving you alone?

Oh no. Not anymore.

Oh.

What do they want, though?

Complete destruction of all living things, of course.

Yep, that would do it.

Oh yes. It motivates humankind to do great things, at least.

Right. Like fighting?

Not so much. Learning to control the technology, and ascend leaps and bounds through what we've discovered.

It seems like a pretty intense trade-off.

But it's worth it.

[ Sighs. ]

There's always someone who thinks that.

There are people who can recognize the benefit in pursuing the advancements that can be found from an advanced society. If we can control it, we can improve humanity by tenfold, if not more.

It always depends on what kind of advancements. Some end up doing more harm than good, if you ask me.

You have anything in particular in mind? I've found little that has not benefited us in the end.

Stuff along the lines of genetic enhancement.

Tricky business. There's a point when technological advancements may supersede the genetic ones.

They also overlap a lot of the time.

Yes, they do. Not always, but there's merit in looking into what they can do for us if we can control it.

Maybe. Maybe not. I don't think there's anything wrong with advancing at our own pace.
