On being dragged out of headspace
My dear mun, while I appreciate the new tobacco– [ Merry raises his pipe in salute ] you might want to think about what it means to be sharing me out in the open.
I can seem rather different than I am in the movies, you know. Older, for one, and more calm.
[ Some thoughtful puffs of smoke ] I don't ask for much, but I don't know if we are quite ready to take this step, to be truthful. But I will stand with you, as I do with Frodo, if this is what you chose to make of it.

Ahbig, it's not so bad! (And, apologies, I fell asleep)
I suppose. I shall be careful, at any rate. One good thing about my mun is that she has no stomach for anything too scary.
[ If there is a wedding, it will be the finest alien of all, even better than Aragorn or any of the elves or dwarves or hobbits and a terribly lovely romance that Frodo will be terribly jealous of, no matter how many eyes said alien has. So there.
Merry has a deep longing that he was there to see it.As for the other part... ]
You hide it well, cousin. I don't think Sam has noticed quite yet. [ Merry is slightly ashamed at this next bit. ] I've just been looking for it, 's all. Bilbo got like that, sometimes. Not as much, but there were days...
[ Merry shrugs. He can be too nosy sometimes, but he is just worried, okay? He sighs, and takes a slow drag from his pipe. ]
'M just afraid you'll worry away into nothing.
(no problem!)
Then you may find yourself much better off than most of us, if that will deter her.
[Oh yes, he would be so jealous, what with your alien creature having too many eyes and smelling like bad milk all the time! And an awful shade of orange and purple!
Frodo will count it a blessing in that regard that Merry wasn't around to see it!]I would prefer it kept that way. Sam has his own life to live; it's best this is kept quiet if it may. I won't worry away into nothing though.
[it saddens him to hear that Bilbo was getting on this way. Frodo had thought it was longing for travel and going back out to the rest of the world... but it seems that wasn't quite it]
Nothing ever goes by you unnoticed for long, does it?
(still terribly embarrassed)
She is a bit of a 'fraidy cat, you know. And yet orcs and Nazgul don't faze her a bit. I don't believe I shall ever manage to understand her.
[ It would only be like that in company, in private with would smell like honeyblossoms and daises, and look like the prettiest hobbit-girl you ever did see.
Oh well. There is always next time.]As you wish cousin.
[ Merry doesn't agree in the slightest, but he isn't about to argue. He's been enough of a nosy hobbit into Frodo's affairs. He does, however, want to raise Frodos spirits just a bit. ]
Bilbo was only like that towards the end, though, as far as I could tell, just before his birthday party when he left. I believe it had become too heavy for him, then.
[ Merry doesn't miss much, though there are times when he wishes it was not so. ]
That's the real Brandybuck oddity, a need to be ever vigilant and prepared. Buckland is a buffer for the Shire, you know, and we have always been a queer sort that way.
[ Because he can't just say he cares, Frodo, even though that's really the long and short of it.
Meriadoc is a worry-wart, when he isn't off pranking with Pippin](don't be!)
[Let's face it Merry, you can't beautify this alien.]
I had thought he had seemed funny, but I didn't quite see it then. Maybe I didn't want to.
One must be that way when you're so close to the Old Forest, but you have always been more canny than most.
[he's said it mildly, as if it were only an everyday thing, but he knows what Merry is getting at outside of it]

This alien doesn't even exist anyways]Bilbo always seemed a bit strange since he came back, though I suspect it was only because he'd been such a boringly respectable hobbit before.
[ It is almost strange, how much Merry realizes he misses Bilbo, though he and Bilbo were no where near as close as Frodo and Bilbo are. ]
I- that's not true, Frodo. I'm no more canny than anyone else who takes the time to look.
[ He's glad of it, even though he feels ashamed about it. It's such a selfish sort of thing, especially knowing that Frodo can't seem to really call the Shire 'home' any longer. ]

which means its an invitation to make it as terrible as possible]He grew more confident in himself I think, bolder too, and cared a good deal less what others thought of him.
You ought to give yourself more credit. You take the time to look on almost everything, no matter how small it may seem.
[it sounds like he would have preferred this be the one time Merry wasn't so though, he doesn't want him to worry either]
re-reading this thread and replying with the TRON soundtrack. Very interesting mental images.
Too bad. Estella Bolger already called dibs.]Nothing wrong with that. Any self-respecting hobbit knows who he is and what he can do.
[ It'd be hypocritical to say otherwise, given how he and Pippin had been once they'd returned. Besides, those traits are the best part of the Brandybucks. (Heck, everything is the best part of the Brandybucks, except for being stuffy old coots).
Someone might be biased just a tad.]I'd always had the time to look, before. [ Damn it, he's running out of excuses ] And you're family; it's not like I can just ignore it.
[ A considerate pause, before Merry begins to grin. ]
Though I shall ever stand by the opinion that the SB's aren't family enough to count.
hobbits on light cycles, sign me up
[there's a faint smile]
Considering only some of what you helped rope Pippin into with talk, or what handful he is, it's a wonder you managed much else. But of course, family is family.
[Frodo's expression sours a little at the SBs; he's had plenty enough of the family to last a lifetime]
Unfortunately, you can't choose your family or even if you could, you can't choose on how often they stop by.
And Sauron as the MCP/Clu2. This is a thing that forever exists
[ Let it never be said that Gandalf did not have many admirers in the Shire, and near as many Na-sayers. ]
Pip's not so bad, and he's rather creative on his own, you know. I just follow along becaue it's fun.
[ Shameless Merry is terribly shameless.
As for those unfortunate relatives that Merry blessedly does not share ]
I am sure they'll stop eventually, if only so that they no longer make fools of themselves.
A perfect match!
I don't doubt it at all. I'm afraid I've seen how creative Pippin can get when there's no one to reign him in. [he lifts an eyebrow] You following along! Maybe from a safe distance when you think you need it.
One can only hope.
[Sure you don't want them? Look how generous Frodo is being, he'll even let you have them for free. In fact, he might pay you!]
hahaha yes
I'm not quite that brave, Frodo.
[ Merry can't quite help but chuckle at the implication that he wasn't quite as wild as one to follow Pippin along in his follies. ] Ah, but cousin, there is no distance that is safe should Pippin be up to mischief.
[ Not for all the ale and pipeweed in Gondor and a crown would Merry take on the Sackville-Bagginses as relatives.
Though, really, they aren't quite that bad. ]no subject
You are wrong there, for the best distance is found if you have a good excuse and nothing (or anyone) to tie you to what his - and your- mischief sows.
[
say that very thing when they are your closer relatives and can come calling at any time! I dare you!wow, Merry.]no subject
[ Grumpy Gandalf is very terrifying. Merry would hate to see him genuinely furious. ]
Even then, Frodo, one best take care who such mischief is played upon. There are those who just know [ Like, for instance, Gandalf.
Unfortunately, (or rather, extremely fortunately) Merry will never eperience that to decide for himself. And you would keep them for all that, Frodo? If you had the chance to pass them on to someone else ]no subject
[So would Frodo, it must be a terrible thing!]
Gandalf must have a second nose just for trouble or just as likely, eyes in the back of his head.
or hidden within the beard[Some days he would hardly keep them but at the same time, to inflict them on another doesn't seem at all fair]
/I am late and terrible so sorryyyyyy
[ Merry is barely holding back the amuseent in his voice. ]
Definitely in the beardMore'n likely there are multiple sets of 'em.[ Not fair at all ]
So, any plans for more adventures, cousin?
It's all good!
How frightening! And how frighteningly dull for some of those eyes, if all they ever see is beard or the inside of his hat.
I'm afraid I'm caught in my own adventure at the moment. I have been trapped in a cit which has yet to see day of any sort.
Re: It's all good!
I wouldn't say it'd be dull, Frodo. Who knows that Gandalf keeps in his beard and under his hat. Could be very excitin'
[ Hey.... waitaminute ] You wouldn't happen t' be there with Eowyn, would you?
Can y' keep an eye on her for me? Not that she needs it.
Re: It's all good!
[a smile breaks out at the thought, one that Frodo tries to stifle quickly because it's Gandalf!]
You shouldn't speak that way, as if Gandalf's person was a magpie collecting all sorts of things. [Frodo's voice sounds strained with the effort not to laugh and with the supreme effort it is to appear utterly serious about the matter]
Yes, I am here with her, and her brother. And Strider and Faramir are here too, as well as Boromir and Legolas. [he nods, Eowyn doesn't seem to need it] Of course, I shall keep an eye on her.
I'm sorry I was replying and then I was gone the latter half of the week and I am terribly late
[ Hint. You are faling, cousin, and Merry is happy to see you smiling. IT seems so rare, these days ]
My Lord Eomer as well? And King Elessar [ And for all that Merry is a Rider of Rohan, that will never not be weird to say ] and all the rest. Why, you'd have a right old gathering if it weren't such a scary place.
I'm glad that you have friends there, though I suppose that I am not so glad that you all have to be there. It sounds perfectly horrid.
No problem, been on and off again actvitiy wise too!
[He'll blame you and today being a good day, of course]
Yes, to all of them. It is a horrid place but as you say, there are friends there.
If your mun forces you onto an adventure, I hope you find friends wherever you may end up.
We can be terribly slow together XD
I hope it too, Frodo, though I doubt I'll be going anywhere soon. My mundane wants to get a bit more familiar with me, and she has this thing called "real life" that seems to constantly override her plans for me.
Still, I hope to find such good friends as you have. And, perhaps, a less terrible place to be with them.
[ He feels a bit selfish about that, but Merry isn't going to lie. ]
It truly has been wonderful to see you, cousin.
slow train pulling in, all aboard
Enjoy your moments of peace while you may, Merry. You never know when you might get pulled off your feet; muns can be a mysterious bunch.
I think you will, if anything ever happens. But it seems many places seem so dangerous.
[he smiles softly at him]
I'm glad to see you as well. As always.
last call never, because we are all so terribly slow that it barelyever manages to leave the station
I will cherish them aplenty, I assure you. There are days when I think I shall do nothing but sleep and eat as many breakfasts as I can manage, to make up for all the sleeping and breakfasts I've missed over the events that have happened.
It's terribly lazy of me, I know, but I can't quite bring myself to mind, some days.
[ Merry takes a contemplative look, glancing over at his mun, who only returns the look with a raised eyebrow and a silent "we'll see". ]
Perhaps we can meet again, some time. In a place less... insubstantial as this one.
it leaves a good one inch per month! That's service.
Lazy! Merry, after everything you have gone through, you deserve a chance to relax.
[goodness, how ominous that sounds!]
This place seems like a crossroads of sorts, for all kinds of people, but I would like it.
On occasion, two and a half inches, if it needs to be placed on express travel.
You most of all, Frodo, and yet you are already in the thick of things.
...Though I am to understand it is not entirely willing on your part?
[ He has yet to know his own mun well enough to begin to think ill of them as a whole, but that does not change his mild displeasure at Frodo's predicament.
It would be far more ominous if mun wasn't about to move and have all her free time taken up for a bit.]It just seems empty, to me. [ SO UNIMAGINATIVE, MERRY. He shrugs. ] Hopefully, it may be arranged. However, I make no promises. My mun has more pressing priorities. I don't mind overmuch, it means I get to sit back and smoke to my hearts content.
Did you know she keeps an entire years-worth of Longbottom leaf in her headspace just for my use? It seems almost a never-ending supply.
You should have some and some extra to take with you, I'll certainly not need all of it.
Good god, that's moving too fast!
Indeed, my dear, I cannot help but agree.
