Yea! [Heheeee! Evidently he missed the deadpan.]

Hehh? Gladi...

No no, a duel! With cards..! See? [He'll pull out a pad from his side, unfold it, set it on his arm... And then put a lens of sorts over his eye... And hold up a deck of cards.] We have card matches..! The space is for the AR!

Oh, I see. [Sounds amused, slight laughter in his voice.] Do you ever gamble in these card duels, like in poker?

Aah... Some people ante their strongest cards... [His tone says he doesn't.] The only cards I ever take from a duel are Numbers though..!

...I'm afraid I'm completely unfamiliar with your game. Would you be willing to try explaining it to me?

[starscream no] Sure!

[No Starscream no-] I'll start with the basics..! [sTARSCREAM DON'T DO IT-]

[Yuuma has pulled out some other cards from a side pouch, and... TOO LATE, STARTING TO EXPLAIN.] First, these are the different types of cards you normally see now! Traps, Spells, and Monsters; there are different types of monster cards, and depending on the type, you have to summon them differently. Some of them aren't really used now though... [he adds.] Like 'synchros'...

What are synchros?

[yes, starscream loves learning anything new]

They were a type of monster card that you needed 'tuners' to summon..! Most people use these though! [He holds up a black-rimmed monster card.] Xyz..! Using the right number of monsters of the same level, you can summon an Xyz monster, with the other monsters becoming its overlay units..!

First you have to summon a normal monster though. Like this. [This monster card has an orange rim.] Anything that's four or less levels can be summoned normally. Anything higher needs a tribute though- if it's level five or six, you need one tribute. If it's higher than that, you need two..! [He might have mixed his facts up for anything higher than eight levels though, but shhhhh.]

Question--er, questions about terminology:

What are tuners and overlay units? And what do you mean by 'tribute?'

Tuners were a type of normal monster- they had the word 'tuner' on them.

And an overlay unit is what a monster used to Xyz summon becomes! Xyz monsters activate certain effects when you use their overlay units!

Tribute is what happens when you send a monster from the field to the graveyard to summon another monster..!

[He takes an almost awkwardly short pause between each explanation, as though mentally double checking each one.]

Very intricate--did it take you much time to master the game?

Ah- well, I always dueled when I could, and Astral helped and-

[MASTER. ...YOU SAID MASTER. Annnnd suddenly all he's doing is looking at you in clear glee and awe.]

[well, starscream's just assuming you have mastery; you certainly do seem to know your stuff]

[Starscream is shifting uncomfortably at being stared at with a glee and awe that's inexplicable to him. If the human hadn't done that when first meeting a large robot like him, Starscream doesn't know why he's acting like this now. Delayed reaction maybe? So trying to change the topic with a stilted question like this.]

--Astral? Is that another card duelist?

[That might explain why the human wasn't immediately surprised by his appearance, if he'd seen other non-Earth creatures before.]

How did he traverse different dimensions? ['Scream sounds very curious now.]

Aah- I let him in..!

[He holds up a key around his neck.] I had a dream with a door- and by opening it with this key, I let him through.

[And suddenly, he looks a tad embarassed.] Eh... I... Accidentally scattered his memories when it happened though... ...which is why we're gathering 'numbers' cards...

Where did you get that key?

[Frowns.]

His scattered memories were trapped in those cards? [How would that even work? Perhaps if this being had much of his mind in the form of data, and that was linked to those cards? A far-fetched hypothesis though.]

I guess? [hnn... He actually stops to think about that for a moment.] I don't know, they seem to take a different form depending on who finds them first... So maybe the weren't cards to start.

[Maybe. But in his world? The entire universe rests on these things, they were probably always cards.]

Do you know where your father got the key?

[NOT PHASED.]

Are they more like bodies of energy then? That can be transferred and alter their forms?

Mn... He found it on one of his expeditions..! Though... I don't really know where the expedition was...

...And I can't exactly ask...

[....yea moving on.]

Maybe? All of the Numbers have some sort of power... Some of them even speak..!

i always knew he'd be precious with the right people, and now i have a chance to play him as such

I may or may not have screamed in laughter at the end of 'Triangulation' though.

that ending amused me too. i was just glad scream wasn't badly hurt or anything for once

yea, he's really gone through the wringer in this show yIKES... (..also remind me to draw these two)
