I was only just starting to learn how to make friends again.

It is a bit cruel to the poor cat, isn't it?

Although I once read a funny story where they tried the experiment and the cat very sensibly wandered away. The 'moral' was something about needing better boxes.

"Are you certain? Needing better boxes is a moral? I know we're far from experts, but that doesn't sound right."

It was a spoof moral, I think.

"All right, yes, they are occasionally amusing, usually, when they aren't intending to be."

I've become rather fond of a book called Catch-22. Black comedy, quite hilarious.

"Yes, I've heard of it. Personally, I think their science fiction is amusing. They get so much wrong!"

Oh, I know. At least it's creatively wrong, though, yeah?

"True enough. They're such a young species."

They'll grow up eventually.

"Oh, yes, with the Doctor playing nursemaid to them the entire time!"

"I do try, at times, to imagine or deduce why he is so fond of them. He must see something in them."

Well, he gets to awe them with everything he does . . .

"Well. Yes, but...their ignorance must surely become annoying after a time. He's been around them for centuries."

I guess it hasn't yet.

"Well, I can't fault his patience, then. I have certainly grown weary of it."

He's easily amused, I guess.

"Ridiculously so. He needs to raise his standards."

Perhaps then he'd notice us . . .

"Perhaps. Noticing the obvious isn't the Doctor's strong suit."
