[he shouldn't have been surprised to hear that Kirei was the one that did this to Bazett. but then she goes on to say how Angra saved her life. just as she said earlier. Kotomine left her for dead and that..."thing" that was causing Sakura so much pain saved this woman]

I'm sorry, Bazett. Between Zouken and Avenger, they've caused Sakura to suffer so much and so many people died because of the curse inside the Holy Grail. To you, Angra Mainyu is your saviour. To me, he's an enemy. Sakura won't be free of him until I stop him.

You're wrong to assume Avenger had anything to do with the curse.

Angra is... [she looks down, feeling the reminder of their departure weighting down her heart.] was probably evil, but he wasn't responsible for whatever you think happened in the Grail. He was absorbed and trapped inside of there without being able to choose but become what humanity wanted him to be. It wasn't enough they tortured him and made him like that, even after death they took away his will and consent.

He was only released to become my Servant.

[he gets what she's saying. Angra Mainyu. said to have taken on all the evils of the world. he was an excuse to the people that did such things to him. but no matter how Bazett described Avenger, to Emiya Shirou, he was in the way of Sakura's happiness]

I understand. [Bazett seemed like an honest person, and to speak so passionately about something as dark as the curse of the Grail... unfortunately, if he doubted himself for even a split moment, he would have already lost]

But...I have no other choice. I chose Sakura. I promised her that I would be her superhero. Angra Mainyu is using her to get out.

[while Bazett's smile is a bitter one, Shirou doesn't offer one in turn. but what really catches him by surprise is when Bazett says that of anyone in the world, Avenger would know his pain and feelings the most. it's enough to cause his gaze to visibly widen. how he has any relation to all the evils of the world...well. it's something worth talking about with Bazett sometime. if she moved in to his place and Sakura was still around, that meant that he must have succeeded... unless this was an alternate dimension altogether]

Bazett... [abrupt though their meeting was, he can tell that she's a good person. and as hard as it was to wrap his head around the embodiment of evil being someone decent...]

Avenger may be something else to you, but I won't even think about what he is to me. I'll just do what I have to do.

My mundane explained me that thing in the Grail was using his soul, but what gave it form wasn't himself anymore. It was humanity's wish of what he should be.

Avenger would have been happy to live leisurely as you do everyday.

You mean to tell me...that Avenger was being used too? [...like Sakura? no, he can't think like that. it almost makes him nauseous. he doesn't know what to believe. but if Bazett was telling the truth...was Avenger a victim too? a victim just like Saber was?]

His entire existence is about him being used so people would feel better about themselves. Even in death, he has no escape from that fate.

[that's right. Shirou just had to remember what was most important. no matter what Bazett said, he would continue on with what he needed to carry out. Sakura was on the line. it was okay]

This is an old story, Shirou. Once upon a time, somewhere else, a person was given the crimes of all the country and punished until death. Now this he never asked for that. He was a good-natured young man when they chose him arbitrarily in order to bear their sins.

[so it begins the tale of that unfortunate man who is unable to rest, unable to die, as he exists to relief the burden the world has.

Shirou gives Bazett his undivided attention as he listens to a story that only serves to grow more morbid and violent. more cruel. in her words, he hangs off of each and every one. and then...he starts to understand. somebody who had nothing. somebody who was empty. where Avenger asked "why me?", Shirou asked himself the very same question that ultimately lead to his twisted sense of values. "why me?" why couldn't everyone else live?]

Whatever he's become...he's still in the way. It doesn't matter whose responsible. What matters is that I take Sakura back.

Though if that's not the real Angra I'm fighting, it should be alright. I'll just blame humanity's wish of him instead. That's one less person to curse him.

[Her throat feels dry from talking. All they have lived together. The glimpse of his past.

He'd have like to go back and build a portrait of the world into that void. A precious picture of the humanity he hates to love and loves to hate. That's something I understood when he told me to run towards the light as he ran into the opposite direction.

[it helps when thinking of what he's about to destroy as not the real Avenger. if Avenger and Caren had helped him...if he really was as decent of a guy--no. it was more then that. Emiya Shirou was Angra Mainyu in the time that Bazett knew him]

Hopefully he'll understand what I have to do more than anyone.

I wanted him to live a normal, happy life. That isn't what he deserves, Shirou!
