You know they're just icons, right? [Mary brushes her hair out of her eyes and stares unimpressed into the... wherever it is she's looking.] There's really no need to obsess.

[She rolls her eyes and scoffs in an... incredibly teenage way.]

I don't even know why you made this account. It's not like there's a point. [squaring her shoulders determinedly, self-consciously aware that she looks a little silly.] My life will be way too boring for you to write anything about and that's just fine with me. Got it?

But that's what the life is- it's fear. It's knowing that there are monsters under your bed and that any flickering light could mean a demon or a spirit. It means learning to fear every cold spot and power flicker, every shadow, every person who acts even a little off- it means never relaxing, having to watch out for everything, all the time, even in your own home because no matter how much salt you put down there's always something you haven't heard of that can get in.

[She stops suddenly, takes a deep breath. There it is again, that cliff she's standing on the edge of.]

[He listens to her, because even if he knows, listening is important.]

Shhhhh.

[He takes her hand, lifting the charm bracelet up.]

Shhhhh. Mary, believe me, I know. I know. There are people born, and we are people.

[Not human but people.]

Being born, where I am from. Not a lot, but they have special abilities. Like something out of a comic book. I'm one of those people. People, since before I was born, have been hunting me. Just because I was born. My children as well. Most of us are harmless, others are not. But we are talking mobs forming to lynch children who are barely old enough to go to school. I know what fear is, what it means to jump at shadows. To know, on a level no one, much less a child, should ever know that you are never ever safe.

But I didn't impart that fear to my children.

[She looks from the bracelet to him, thinking hard on how to answer. It might be a good point, but she can't answer with that. She can't agree.]

That's all this life is. It's fear and risk and knowing you might never come home. [Shaking her head, her eyes never leaving his.] I don't want it. It's a cage.

It doesn't have to be that way. My children, they know. Beyond all doubt, if they ever call me for help? There is no power on Earth, Heaven, or Hell that will stand until I have them safe in my arms again. That's what Dad is for.

[And he means that too. He wasn't joking when he told Lucifer he'd follow his children into Limbo to rescue them. There and beyond.]

It's different, I suppose, because I immigrated to Israel. And we all serve in the military. And you know, every time, you might not come home. But we weren't afraid. You can watch out for your family, without making them afraid. Without making yourself afraid.

[He moves his hand from her cheek to stroke it just once with his forefinger. But he kept his eyes locked on hers.]

You're so much braver than you know. So much stronger. Believe in yourself, you can do this.

[His touch sends a shiver down her spine, but her eyes never leave his. She feels almost hypnotized and hangs onto every word.]

But I don't want to do it. I never wanted it. I just want to live.

Is that something you can do? Just forget everything you know is out there, pretend it will never affect your family? Would you pretend you don't need to lock your doors?

[Like velvet. He's not being cruel. But going into this with her eyes open but with hope is the best thing for her family.]

[A flash of fire in her eyes, however weak.]

I could keep them safe without wrecking their innocence.

Yes you can. That's what I'm saying.

[A slow quirk of his lips. Come on Mary, you're clever. You can figure this out.]

[So offended. But not really.]

Do you think I'd just stop protecting them? That I wouldn't sew anti-possession charms into their clothes and put wards on the house? That I wouldn't find a way to lay down iron and salt permanently?

I think you don't know how to explain that to them, without making them afraid. But I know you'll figure it out.

[He smiled.]

Iron is easy, by the way. They sell iron strips a quarter inch deep by one-sixteenth to a quarter inch wide and in lengths from six inches to several metres. Use a gouge to open a trench in the doorway or window, tap it in, seal over it. Use metallic paints to make it look artistic.

[Blink blink.]

You'd just have to coat them with salt. That couldn't be hard.

[She shakes her head again, eyes downcast.]

I wish I could just forget. I know that I can't.

Toddlers with muddy feet.

[So deadpan. Maybe voice of experience.]

No you can't. You can turn it into a strength.

Yeah, maybe. But some day, some friend or cousin will come for me, they'll try to drag me back.

[He laughs softly, runs his fingers lightly though her hair.]

You're strong enough to push back.

[She freezes a little, a hitching uncertainty that has her torn. The fingers feel nice, but.]

Yeah. [Distractedly coming back to the conversation now. Yes. Focus.] I- I think I am.

What about you? How do you keep people safe without scaring the daylights out of them? I hate having to lie.

You are.

[So sure of that.]

I pull rank. I'm Dad. Dealing with scary things is my job. I do teach them how to protect and defend themselves. But I do with the same tone of making sure they know basic self defence for being mugged, or CPR and basic first aid, or how to drive.

[He sounds so sure of himself. Just thinking about it makes her head hurt.]

I don't even want to have kids yet.

No reason you should be yet. You've got a while.

[Yes, yes he is.]

Yeah.

[Beat.]

What about you? I've talked about myself so much, but I don't know almost anything about you.

I have quite a few, biological and adopted.

[That was an understatement.]

More of the latter than the former.

[She nods, smiles, says something sweet in return. They talk like that for a while, his hand in her hair sometimes, talking about shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. Mary relaxes more and more, finding him easy to be around, soothingly trustworthy, something simple to cut through how twisted up her own mind is.

A distraction she desperately needs.

It's enough to distract her from the little touches, the little (but significant) ways he's invading her personal space, and he's easy enough to talk to that she accidentally leans into his touches sometimes, encourages without meaning to when honestly, she's just going with it and trusting that he's just acting in a way that she's be fine with in the future.]

[He enjoys the chatting, and he doesn't mean to keep invading her space, but he doesn't bother backing off either, as long as she is comfortable. He eventually leans over and kisses her lightly on the temple.]

Are you feeling more settled?

[Dfkgdh not expecting that. She hesitates a little, thrown off-balance by him (again), and glances up with an uncertain smile.]

Yeah. I feel a lot better. [Pause.] Thanks.

I'm glad to be able to help.

[Warmly.]
