You know they're just icons, right? [Mary brushes her hair out of her eyes and stares unimpressed into the... wherever it is she's looking.] There's really no need to obsess.

[She rolls her eyes and scoffs in an... incredibly teenage way.]

I don't even know why you made this account. It's not like there's a point. [squaring her shoulders determinedly, self-consciously aware that she looks a little silly.] My life will be way too boring for you to write anything about and that's just fine with me. Got it?

[That reaction is the last thing she expects, but Mary's smart. She can roll with it.]

They're- they're awful. Terrifying. So much more than any human should be able to deal with, and a lot of times they are. [Before she knows how to stop it her voice is dipping into a slightly scared stage whisper.] So many people die in that life. I don't even know how my parents have lasted.

[Mary reacts instantly, dropping her hand and stepping back one, two, three paces, whipping out a knife from nowhere.]

What are you?!

[fridgetothefire]

[Anya just looks at the knife, sad and resigned, then looks away. It's not fear - it's shame.]

I'm human.

You don't have to worry about me.

[minifridge]

[For a long, tense moment Mary does nothing. Just looks the girl over, checking body language, posture, expression, watching for any small movements.

But no. She's telling the truth. Mary pockets her knife, slightly shame-faced.]

I'm sorry. Normally the only people who say things like that are... monsters, right before their fangs come out.

[She laughs again, and it's a jagged, bitter sound.]

Dad's not. Human. He always says you'll all kill us if you can - and I guess he's right, yeah?

[minifridge]

[She tenses.]

What is he?

[fridgetothefire]

[She shrugs one shoulder. She can't bring herself to say mutant, not after a lifetime of family loyalty beaten in, not after that knife. Maybe there are humans out there like Anya, humans that just want to mind their own business, but she can't pretend Mary is one of them.]

He's more.

[And that's only the truth, the only truth that matters.]

[minifridge]

What does that mean? How can you not be like him?

[fridgetothefire]

I don't know. Mom was human. He kept waiting for me to turn out to be special, but - I'm just not.

[minifridge]

There's nothing wrong with that.

What's special about him? Are his parents human?

He doesn't talk about them.

But I think they were, yeah.

He just. He does things people can't do, okay?

Yeah, but- my family's been hunting for centuries. Nobody's ever heard of a human just having abilities without being something else. If it was real, we would have heard about it.

[But... still. There is always more to learn. She frowns and chews her lip in thought, the information slowly processing.]

Maybe I'm just crazy.

Maybe it's easier to believe he's a monster than to deal with reality.

[minifridge]

I don't know about that. If demons are real to me, maybe superpowers are real to you.

I wasn't trying to be. It just makes sense- most people don't know about monsters. Maybe there's more out there that my people don't know.

[She's trying to be open-minded okay. 8( This isn't easy for generational hunters.]

If you try to kill everyone who's not like you, I wouldn't be surprised some of them try to keep themselves secret.

[Her jaw drops a little, offended.]

You're the only person I've ever met who knew people "not like us" that don't murder innocent people. I'm talking about monsters, predators that feed on people.

[Another shrug. Monsters is just what humans call anyone they're afraid of.]

Oh, he kills people.

Doesn't mean he won't do anything to keep his family safe.

[minifridge]

[It's a language barrier. In Mary's world, "monster" is a word with a very, very specific meaning, and you don't use it on people you don't like or don't agree with.]

Human killers aren't my job, whether or not they have... powers.

...None of it's my job! I meant hunting. Human murderers aren't part of hunting, that's the rest of the world's job.
