[ She leaves the threat hanging in the air. No doubt, her other self can imagine. ]

JUPITER placed us in our father's care when we were pretty young. As Al got older though... [He trailed off, shrugging a shoulder.]

I'll never stop looking for him, and our mother. [He can imagine, but it was hard to threaten an entire culture - he'd learn to grow up a bit more subtle than that.]

[ Tempted to ask what "JUPITER" is and whether it has a relation to the planet in the Earth's solar system, but the thought is quickly discarded. ]

Still don't get why they'd take Al away. Why? And Mom...

[ Well, she's given up chasing after the dream of getting their mom back. Al had become her priority. ]

[He grits his teeth, because really - the whole concept is fairly stupid. If he can see that, why can no one else?!]

Anyway, he didn't do anything about it when they took Al. Fed me that 'will of JUPITER' crap everyone else believes, and I haven't been able to find them or William.

[ Woah, woah, woah. Her mind comes to a screeching halt because the very concept of classes as her other self explains them is outside her frame of reference. Only those like the Ishvalans had been treated as second class. Not people within the same family. Why could the reason be?

It figures, though. That regardless of what world or what version of her exists, she will always come to hate her father. ]

The Middle class isn't so bad, I guess. [A shrug] Al can still go to school, get a job. He'll just never run a company or have half the luxuries of the Upper class... but he's got Mom.

The Lower class are sub-human. They're uneducated, slaves- I'm surprised the bastard didn't just keep the first woman he knocked up as a Pet. Instead he ran away with his tail between his legs... Just to repeat the process with Mom.

[A pause] If your father left when Al was little, does that mean you got to stay with your mother?

[ She's not liking the sound of this other world at all. It creates in her the kind of anger that only forms when things get really bad. Like after Nina... ]

That's screwed up. Classes shouldn't... Such bullshit. [ Glares down at the ground for a moment. ] No. Couple years after the old man left, mom got sick.

[It is such bull shit, but he doesn't need to add fuel to that fire.]

Our's was sick too... Didn't stop them from expecting her to raise Al alone. [See Ed... Doesn't know about that whole dying thing.] I haven't been able to track 'em down yet, but I will.

Mom was... she was more than sick. After couple years, she died. So, since then, 'salways been me and Al.

[ But her expression shows she's not quite telling everything. She's not sure she should. This Ed hasn't even been able to see Al. What would he say if he knew what she had done to hurt her brother, even when she had him close. ]

I hope you find him. I hope you find them both.

[ She forces a bitter laugh, gaze still focused at the ground because it hurts to much to say anything more just yet. She remembers the haunting chill that had filled her when her mother died, the emptiness that would never go away. Surely, he must know a little of what that's like, not having seen his own mother for so long.

And he doesn't even know the worst part yet. ]

Yeah. Y-yeah, she... she died. I was ten.

[Quietly] Ten....

Al would have been carted off to some orphanage probably.

[He's really thinking about this now. A lot of what he knew about the Middle class was based on books, he couldn't predict anything for sure.

Still. He remembers that she's there - barely.] Were you-?

[ She says it as she jerks up her head, preparing to glare at the other boy before remembering that's she's still talking to herself, even if this version is male. She won't worry about comments about how a girl can take care of herself or pity because this is Ed and she knows herself too well, despite the differences.

So, giving an apologetic look before glancing away, she repeats herself but in a softer tone. ]

Was I...? What?

[He blinks at the outburst, wondering what part of that came off offensive, but then her tone softens.

And honestly, he's just... puzzled. What just happened there?

Quietly] Were you sent to an orphanage?

The lower class, you'd just be on your own... No one would care. [He doesn't even know if William made it alive] but for Al they would have found someone to take care of him- wouldn't they...?

[No, this is not a personal insult. He doesn't think she's inferior because she's female, they're just from different worlds. In his world ten is not old enough to be on your own.

It's almost like he's hoping her answer will relieve some of his fear on the matter, more than anything else.]

[ Orphanage? What kinda dumb— She cuts off the thought, reminding herself that his world must be different. ]

No, we lived together. Mom... left us some money. We lived with some friends for a while, and then with our teacher.

After that— [ A beat. It would probably be best if she avoided the year she and Al had tried to resurrect their mom altogether. ]

I joined the military. As a State Alchemist. That's when I was twelve. 'Cause of my status, they couldn't take Al from me. So we lived on our own.

[You can say that again.

He can't imagine living with a teacher, but he lets that one slide for now.]

Twelve-? [He quirks an eyebrow at that.] And I get crap for being sixteen.

[A pause. He did notice that beat, but part of him chalks it up to her thinking no one would believe she was in the military more than- censoring out a year of her life.]

At least you two had each other.

Yeah. Twelve.

[ Any other time, she might have been smirking with arrogance and pride. But not this time. She does manage the slightest of smiles. ]

At least we had each other.
