Defense Against the Dark Arts. For fighting dark wizards and creatures? I think hostile ghosts would come under that. We haven't covered them yet though.

People can't be allowed to just kidnap people whenever they want, even if they're ghosts.

If they could stop them that easily they would have done it already.

Maybe you didn't have the right wizards or witches. Everyone's abilities are different.
