Eyeing Mostly Harmless

So you've decided you want to try me out? Good for you, you've got good taste. Me- I'm a hell of a guy to have some fun with, and believe me, you take me out somewhere, and we're going to have fun, no matter where we go or what we do. And while I may not be too keen on winding up stranded on an alien spaceship, it won't be the worst situation I've ever been in. Add in the lovely company on the ship, and I could use a little vacation time, huh?

Let's do this, you and me. You've already got a journal now, wouldn't want it to go to waste. You just gotta make a couple more decisions, and if you want, you can re-watch a bit of cannon, and we're ready to go. Just let me give you a bit of advice, since you still haven't settled on a point in my timeline- go with something a bit earlier. We'll both enjoy that more.

I know I liked having fun with you . . .

I think you and I have different ideas of what the word 'fun' means. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind a bit of whips and chains in the bedroom, but it's only fun and games until the heart stops beating.

You haven't spent more than 900 years with war drums in your head, though, now have you?

Nope, I can't say I have. Haven't even gotten to 900, although I guess I will eventually. Hopefully still with the same dashing looks I have now. Maybe a little grayer, I haven't figured out how fast those'll come in yet.

You don't know how much good you did, distracting me that Year. I'd have destroyed the world without you, the drums would've made me.

Flattery will get you everywhere, Master, but you give me too much credit. I wasn't your only playtoy, after all, not even your favorite. The only thing I had going for me was that I don't stay broken. Between you and me, I got a little jealous when you spent too much time with the others.

But not staying broken meant that I could use you whenever I needed to. I didn't always have anyone else I could kill, if not for you I'd have probably blown up a city each time.

Did you? Sorry about that, Jack my boy, but I didn't want to get tired of you. And I'd missed the Doctor, and my wife always needed something or other . . . you know how it goes.

Glad I could be of service. A couple of deaths for me versus an entire city sounds like a good bargain.

The girl's a looker, can't say I blame you for having some- personal time with her. And the Doctor? Who can begrudge you that. As someone who knows what it's like to wait for him, I certainly can't.

See? I'm not all bad, just insane.

We were best friends once, the Doctor and I. Still are, in a sick and broken sort of way.

I'd go more with 'maniacal,' but that's just a personal preference. With a bit of 'madman' thrown in.

He mourned you, you know. With everything you did, everyone who died and suffered, he mourned you. Just like him, isn't it?

Now you're just splitting hairs.

Of course he mourned. He remembers who I was as a child. *He looks truly sad for a moment, then smiles again--big and mad and so, so fake.* He used to copy off me in school.

Hey, a man's only as good as his vocabulary- at least, that's what this librarian told me once, during the eighties. She'd do these little pop quizzes and if you got the word wrong- well, let's just say it was worth it to know your vocab. Not that getting the word wrong was bad either, but trust me, her rewards were much better than her punishments.

Yeah, well, most of us don't have those kinds of memories of you. We- [He breaks off at the ending comment.] He what?

He copied off me in school. Not that he isn't smart, but he tended to skip class and go on adventures. Usually I had to go get him after class, he'd have gotten his foot stuck in a hole or be up a tree with no way down . . .

*He smiles fondly.* You may have noticed that he isn't the greatest pilot. That's because he never actually passed hs driving test. Failed it three times--or was it five? Whatever--and eventually stole one.

I wish we could have stayed young forever.

[A kind of boggled look crosses Jack's face.] You're serious? The Doctor cheated in school and skipped classes? [Well, okay, he can kind of see that. If he squints. But]

I always thought that was just the way the Tardis flew- although he said once it was because it's meant to have multiple pilots. But you're saying he stole his license?

He stole the TARDIS. She was old and about to be thrown away, so she went along with it.

. . . which doesn't improve things, exactly. Between her age, his lack of ability and the lack of five more pilots it's a miracles he ever hits the right place at all.

That explains a lot- I wondered why a ship that advanced had such a rough ride. [He's never going to look at the Doctor quite the same way again. He can't help but grin a bit.] I'll have to ask him about it sometime. Never knew he was such an upstart.

We were quite the pair of renegades.

I wish he'd taken me with him. I spend a long time alone, if we'd stayed together he might've been able to help me stay sane.
