I mourn Blackwater as well.

We have done what we could. And there was not enough of what we have, though we made the best of it. Brave men died in Blackwater, for many different things that we believed. And in that one night, all of them were more real than anything ever was.

Perhaps that was the problem.

[a pause as he considers so many other things; hesitates; but decides to end it with,]

They say the Lannisters have won. And what does that mean, exactly? [a wry smile.]

My uncle should consider himself lucky to have someone like you by his side. You were brave.

I am honored to serve His Grace, but it isn't so much out of courage than of duty.

But one must be brave to carry out one's duty, Ser Davos. Duty can get you killed.

[ Blackwater. It was not a day he remembers fondly, but it would seem recent events will force him to relive it. ]

The battle was lost, but you and I will fight on, smuggler.

[ But for how much longer, is the question that weighs on his mind. And some would say Lord (or is it sill Ser?) Davos' luck has all but run out. ]

No doubt about it. I am very fortunate to have my duty measured by a will I trust.

It will never cease to baffle me, Davos, that you continue to ignore where the fault lies.

[this is a more difficult conversation than he'd like.

Then the fault lies on us both, and between the two of us, measured equal so that it has barely any weight at all.

There is much to blame, but there is also much to work on. The latter is more important than the ability to place faults, which leads us nowhere.

King Joffrey remains on the iron throne. As the gods have decided.

[He's just trolling you Davos. He is Robert's son after all.]

Alright, I believe you. It takes as strong will to stay by my Uncle Stannis' side.

The gods are rather particular with their sport.

[he's not sure which is the greater tragedy: that joffrey lives, or that this can be decided by gods.]

Your Uncle is a good man. [pause.] And just.

Good and just? You are too kind, ser. Uncle Stannis is hardly those things.

( she prayed for joffrey to die. the gods did not listen. )

And why do you say such a thing, ser?

[ Davos and Melisandre. He had need of them both to win the war, yet in the end, only one would remain loyal to him above all others, even their so-called Gods.

He is all of them. There is no man more honourable among the seven kingdoms than Stannis Baratheon. But it might be too early for you to say, however.

King Joffrey is a boy. I don't know much about gods, but it wasn't them we were fighting against when I sailed that night. To say otherwise is to disregard the sacrifice many men and women have made, and I don't think that's right.

But perhaps in our future wars, a goal beyond fighting would be advisable. I'd rather the bards sing of your glory when you are on the throne, and not somewhere else.

A good and just man would not do such horrible things to his own kin. [He frowns.] I'll never see Uncle Renly again.

It means we smashed you.

No. No, a good man would not.

[but a just man would, otherwise.]

The path that His Grace [and not 'your uncle', now] has chosen to regain the throne is not, by any means, good. But his kin were not without flaws, either. And in war, it seems that the most horrible virtues of men become necessary, deplorable as they may be.

The reports may vary from man to man, but I rather doubt you were with that 'we'.

But very well. A victory granted, nonetheless.

Of course I was with the 'we'. I was atop the battlements - I saw your ships burn, too.
