He's living on a desert island away from his family and sleeping with you. He has adopted children that he loves so terribly much and that he just can't stop spending time with.

And exactly what can he do about it where he is? How is it fair to blame him for something he can't change?

I am sorry, I suppose I should be jumping up and down for joy over how utterly happy he is.

Of course not. But there is no point wasting energy hating him for something he has no control over. Hate him for leaving yes but not for surviving where he is stuck.
