I've never seen more trees because there weren't any in Thneedville-- at least, not until Ted found one. I'd only read about them in books before that.

Mmm. Well, Mayfield's a little like that. It has almost everything anyone could want, but it's really mean sometimes. And occasionally people die. And no one can get out even if they want to.

But this Thneedville is probably a little nicer than Mayfield. Can you tell me a little more about it?

Yeah... Thneedville's probably not that bad in comparison, but it's still pretty bad. Imagine a place where everything is made of plastic, even the trees and grass, where you have to pay for the air you breathe because the air outside was ruined a long, long time ago.

They chopped down all the trees, every last one! And without trees, there wasn't anything stopping the smougulous smoke... Apparently, it got so bad, people were getting sick just from breathing!

I don't know; I've only heard stories.

They were making... something. I don't remember the whole story. Nobody does, except for really old people. If Ted's grandma was around, you could ask her; she was probably there.
