See, once I'm in your head, it's really hard for me to go. Just sit back and enjoy it. You and I both know how much fun these few days have been together, and I promise you I'll make it so much more entertaining if you decide to keep at it.

Nightingale. [There's a smile on Mr. Scratch's face. He knows of you. All too well actually.]

[His face is a degree too cold to be normal. His teeth grind together and then he looks distracted.]

[He can feel the stain of darkness inside Nightingale's mind. He still senses that the touch is lingering dormant within. Just a shove in the right direction and the man would be so easy to guide. But no, he'll enjoy this reunion. It's so much more fun playing with people.]

I'm sure you probably know a lot about me. It's great not having to go over and over about who I am, but you know, I honestly don't mind it.

You arrogant self-righteous prick. [There's a dangerous edge to his tone] You two-faced son of a bitch-thinking you can just waltz out of every situation like some kind...some kind of celebrity.

You're..you can't. You hear me? [he points a finger] I'm...I'm on to you.

[Something's not right about this. Nightingale's threats are...empty.]

[He laughs. Those words are empty threats to Mr. Scratch. Pointless words that go way over his head. Keep trying. But poor Nightingale; the guy isn't so bad. Sad, really if you think about it.]

What? About that thing with the wife. Psh, that's been settled years ago.

...I'd call that a confession.

Yeah, go ahead and call it that if you want, but why don't you give her a call and say hello instead. Alice has been doing extremely well for herself. Got some amazing prints out and she even made a film. She's so talented. [And not dead. Yet. Just waiting for that moment when he'll slip and Alice will find out.]

I think I'll just have some men from the bureau confirm that.

[Except he can't. He suspects that Wake knows that except.]

[Nightingale's eyes widen. The world grows a little darker and he taps a hand to his head, looking lost.]

Well obviously do it after. [A smile.] This is way too important for you now.

[He glares at him, staggering.] I know that!

I...I know that. [his hand goes to his gun and falters] I'll shoot you and then you won't move.

And just so you know, I never threatened with the "or else" speech. I don't work like that. I merely suggested to her that it'd be unwise not to let me come out and play.

I was getting so antsy being caged up like that.

You might not have used it, but the implied threat was still there. Doesn't take a genius to know that cooping up the dark isn't a wise idea. A brave one, yes. but not wise.

You got me. [He raises his arms up as if to imply "guilty."]

No one can resist the darkness for that long. Sooner or later everyone cracks under its pressure. Trust me.

I'm better. A lot calmer. A lot happier even. Like a free bird. [He starts humming the Lynyrd Skynyrd song.]

[That earns a brief, knowing little smirk.]

I'll believe it when I see it, buddy. You get evil people doing evil deeds, sometimes the only thing to do is pay them back in kind. That's resisting.

A bird who flew the coop. Would that more of us got that kind of luck. [Bitter? Oh yeah.]

Sometimes in order to get your foot in the door, you have to do a lot of free work. Such is the case with my employees. They don't complain about the work; they don't complain about anything. I couldn't ask for a better team.

[That actually earns an appraising look.]

Loyalty? That's... unexpected. My team wasn't like that. They defected. Ran. Left me and my superior holding the bag, so to speak. What's your trick? How do you earn that kind of loyalty?

With a little Touch, anyone's wiling to come over to me. But I found the best candidates for my team are those that were Taken in their most desperate moments. I may not pay by the standard means, but what I replace with valuables makes up for any wants or needs.

"Touch"? "Taken"? Sorry, you're gonna have to enlighten me on what those mean. Ominous-sounding way of putting it, though. I'm guessing it's not a "sign on the dotted line" kind of thing.

[Supernatural powers plays a huge factor; it makes it much easier for people to submit. They don't really have a choice once the Darkness invades their minds.]
