I thought we understood each other. You already know that I have a lot of things to take care of. I can't afford to slack off just because the war is over. It's now, in fact, that it's most important to reestablish the Republic because any system left without a governing body will turn to anarchy -

Yes, you told me that I can achieve at least some of my goals with what you're considering, but I believe in attaining things through hard work, not through dubious arrangements.

The future? What do you mean?

[Leia's brow furrowed.]

How far into the future are we talking about here?

There are layers to that.

There's the fact we might not be from the same time period.

Then there's the fact that... people from thirty years on keep showing up.

What's the last thing you remember?

[Thirty years into the future? Leia's pensive frown deepened.]

If they had good news, you'd be happy to tell me, wouldn't you?

The last big thing was Endor.

And yeah. I would.

It's the same on my end.

I didn't think things would be easy after we won the war, but knowing that there are still things in the future that we have to face -

[She shook her head, bracing a hand on her hip.]

It doesn't matter. We have to keep going and keep fighting for what we believe in.

[He smiled shyly at her.]

I can always count on you, can't I?

[That shyness was so typical of Luke that Leia couldn't help her smile.]

Of course. I love you.

[She reached out to hold his hand. She never felt unloved between her adoptive mother and father - but learning that Luke was her brother filled a hole in her heart that she wasn't even aware existed.]

I love you, too.

Just... having some trouble keeping my chin up. It'll pass, though.

[Leia stepped closer to him, giving him a look of concern.]

What's wrong? You can talk about it if you need to.

[He ducks his head.]

The place I am right now... what I've learned about the future is making me pretty uncertain about it. I just kinda needed to see you.

[She reached up to stroke his hair.]

Me?

[Was there something terrible that would happen to her? Leia frowned.]

What about the future is making you uncertain? [She certainly wasn't the type to beat around the bush.] Is it something we can change or do something about?

It's complicated, Leia. I took a leave, to help these people, after Endor and because I wasn't sure where to go from there. And now not only do have the people there know who we are, people from our future keep showing up. Thirty years into our future.

[That made her brows raise up. Luke left? That surprised her and made her lonelier than she expected to be. Objectively people needed breaks - although Leia herself never took them - but she found herself missing Luke before he even truly went on his sabbatical.]

[But once again - back to business. That was her way of dealing with things.]

There's always rebuilding the Republic after the war. [But she knew that was her role, not Luke's.]

Is that your writer's purpose for you here? So that you can rest for a while?

[Her gaze softened.] You do need it.

[He knows they have different work to do. There are things each of them can do, the other can't.]

She thinks I need to... work through what happened. I'm not sure how viewing first hand the failures of the future is doing that.

What about you? Why are you here?

Just because the future has failures doesn't mean that what you did was for nothing, or that it wasn't significant. You freed several systems from oppression. Whatever will happen in the future will happen in due time, and we will just face it all then. We've survived wars - we'll survive what's ahead.

[Her jaw was set, her expression determined.]

If there's a way I could help, let me know. I know you need this time for yourself.

[Luke's questions made her smile wryly.]

My writer thinks that I work too much and neglect my emotions. She wants me to spend time with you and with Han, and maybe even get to know our parents, if it's possible. She also tells me that I'll have a son, but she's quiet on the details.

She's really happy that we're talking. [Leia flashed him another smile, more genuine this time.] I am too.

No, I know. I need to focus on what we do and not your--not my failure, which hasn't even happened yet. And there's Rey... [He smiles fondly.] She's my future, too, and she's great.

[He watches her.]

I think she's right, you do work too much. I'm happy we're talking, too. You're not in the place I'm staying now, and I miss you.

[She noticed that slip - of course she did - and it was by virtue of her experience with politics that she kept her face straight. Whatever it was, it had something to do with her, and that wasn't reassuring. However, she would face it in time, as she must.]

I'll keep an eye out for Rey.

[Leia cocked her head to one side.] What is it like in the game that your writer put you in?

Well, it's like a huge starship. And there are Wardens, and Inmates. Wardens choose to go, in exchange for the opportunity to help people and some kind of deal if they accomplish their task. Inmates are there to redeem themselves, only... I'm getting a little concerned with how most of them don't want to be there. But we're there to work with them on whatever they need.

And then sometimes the ship runs into things and odd stuff happens.

So basically you're now working in a prison.

[There were worse things. Leia wondered if he'd truly be able to center himself there, though. She hoped so.]

Odd things? Such as?

Yeah. It... sounded a lot better when it was pitched to me.

And odd things such as, people suddenly being toys. Or everyone landing in a weird fantasy town where half of us believe we've always been there.

Do you think that being there is helping you think about things? [She was genuinely curious and, of course, concerned for her brother.]

[Her eyes narrowed.] How is that even possible?

Honestly? I don't know. I thought it was just a chance to help people like I'd helped... Father. Now I don't know. And I have no idea how it's possible--no one can explain it, either. Then again, half the people I meet aren't from our galaxy but know who I am. I'm not sure how that's possible either.

It's you. I'm sure you've helped many already. I just want to know if you're helping yourself - and if you're not, what can I do?

[At a small attempt at humor, she gave him a crooked smile.] Now I know that you're a hero in our galaxy, but in others too? You make me proud.

[But returning to the topic at hand - ] I don't know how it's possible either and I'd look it up, but our access to materials is limited right now, obviously.

You're doing it. Well, you're over-doing it--remember what Han says about me getting a big head.

[But he grinned at her.]

I'm not sure we have these materials.

So any word on what you're gonna be doing?

[Leia rolled her eyes, but she was smiling.] If you ask me, he's the only one in danger of getting an overinflated ego.

You might be right. I don't even know what's to be found in this place.

Nothing yet. My writer's a busy person so she wants to send me somewhere that's not too strict. I don't even know why she bothered with me when she's busy with work and I'm busy with work.

[Ah, Leia. Always the workaholic.]

She likes you, though, and she really likes that we're talking.
