The drums always get better when I'm violent. They are war drums, after all, they brought a bit of Rassilon's mindset with them. *A small, sad half-smile.* You must see the similarities between Time War thinking and mine--desperate, violent, determined to win and rule.

Without Jack there I'm not sure there would be an Earth left, or either of us. The drumming got louder once the Time War fixed their existence in place. *He shudders.* I still dream about katachronophlogisten and time sheer. Every night.

Just about. I dream of being the last survivor of a squad, yet again, on a mission that is totally pointless because the goal never existed. I dream of trying to cut a dear friend free of a slow-time bubble before timefire undoes her and failing. I dream of meeting the son I never had, as he led untouchable legions of the unmade, and with him is the person I was supposed to be.

[He's mad, the Doctor thinks, completely mad. There's very little about what the Master is saying that's making sense. ]

Not until the end, yeah. For a long time, I tried to avoid it. Hell, I tried to avoid getting involved at all.

Then you never saw the worst of it, not really. By the end reality was twisted and awful, but it was too big to comprehend. I wasn't so lucky.

There was never a Second War in Heaven, not anymore. But some few of us remember it, that war that never was, and we know just how bad a true Time War can be. Your Tenth spoke, once, of the horrors of the Last Great Time War, but mostly that was from second-hand accounts.

I lived it. Even in this timeline I went through much of it twice, and I cannot describe what it was like.

I saw a lot, and I heard a lot. All of which was pretty awful.

I can't imagine what you might have seen, Koschei. And I certainly can't imagine being witness to it twice.

[He looks at The Master with something strange in his eyes. Not like fear, but more like worry.]

Jack doesn't travel with me anymore. [But Clara does, at times, and he certainly doesn't want him anywhere near her.] Koschei, the only time I ever invited you onto my Tardis, you chose to die rather than join me. Why are you suddenly so keen on the idea?

[He had the feeling his old friend was tired of being alone, especially in his own madness. But The Doctor had no reason to trust him, and felt that he shouldn't if he valued his lives. This was, after all, the same man who had tried to take his lives from him so many years before, after he'd just begun his eighth life.]

*He laughs bitterly.* Do you know how many times I died in the Time War?

Me neither. But it was enough that I was running on empty by that point. Why else would I have bothered to make my ring into a soul collector? Why else would I have died instead of seizing any chance at all to live, when survival was always so important to me before? Rejoice, rejoice, we have no choice--or so the song goes.

I just wanted to know if you still cared, so I pretended it was my decision. And what do you know, you did! *A weak smile.* I died knowing that someone cared for me. Even if it was only because we were the last. It would've been a good ending, had all else failed.

[The Doctor studies the Master's face for a moment, trying to make sense of him. There's no denying he is a complete madman in every sense of the word, but somehow, the Doctor can't help but think that somewhere, deep down inside, he can see his old friend lurking. Which makes him seriously consider it. He's still considering it when he speaks again, very softly.]

I always cared, Koschei. As angry as you made me... I always did.

I always cared too. It's just that I tend to blow things up to say hello, and attack your other friends because I miss you.

I don't think I can entirely stop being what I am, but I'm learning how to channel it better. You won't have to be the one that ends things anymore.

[He raises his finger, nearly in his face.] But if you go anywhere near my companion... You will be sorry, Koschei. Don't make me regret this.

If the drums get that bad you can drop me off on Tivoli or somewhere like that so I can order people around for a bit without any harm being done.
