I suppose it's understandable. Not everyone can have my abilities, so it makes sense not everyone would have the confidence to go with them. But in this instance, the doubts are unnecessary and counterproductive.

That's a logical way of looking at it.

Not everyone's capable of being so rational. It's a pretty irrational world we exist in, it's pretty easy to get lost in that instead of clearly looking at what needs to happen.

I'm a scientist. Rational is what I do.

And that's great but that's not how most people operate.

You ever read Kierkegaard?

I can't say I've had much time for philosophy so far. The so-called "soft sciences" aren't really my area.

[invisigoth]

Okay, so he talks about like, how life has infinite possibilities. And that's great, that everything is possible.

But then people get stuck with that in one of two ways. Everything's possible, right? So they start worrying that they could fuck things up in infinite ways. Or they get caught up worrying about things that might not ever happen. And I think that's what happens to a lot of people, when they seem to be lacking confidence. They're caught up in one or the other.

She might be worried about screwing it up somehow, or worried about some crazy thing that could happen but isn't going to happen.

I suppose I can see that. But by definition, nearly all of those things won't happen. It's a waste of mental energy to worry about most of them rather than working to ensure the optimal outcome. If you're prepared properly, you shouldn't need to worry.

And yet we do, because we're irrational creatures. Ruled by our emotions and the fear of the unknown.

Give her time, she'll be fine.

I know she will. It would just be easier to proceed that way in a straight line. Still, I suppose you have a point. Patients sometimes behave irrationally too, and it's important to factor such behavior in to observations.

Yeah. You can be as rational as you want, and you can expect that people will act rationally, but it's best to also prepare for irrationality.

My lab assistant is very fond of reminding me of chaos theory whenever an opportunity arises. And sometimes when it doesn't.

See, even surprises have their own scientific school of study.

There's a scientific study of everything, if you look for it.

Is there a study of making friends with someone?

Sociology would cover that, mainly. Or I guess you could approach it from a psychological point of view, but I suspect that's a bit of a stretch.

What field of science is your specialty?

Biology. Human anatomy, specifically.

I feel like there's a joke to be made there but I'm not smart enough to make it.

Are you a medical doctor or strictly a scientist?

Sometimes that's easier said than done with these typists.

I wish I had some. Mine still insists on keeping me here despite the fact that I'm hardly doing anything.
