(She stiffens and stares, frightened of her still.)

I didn't have any choice this time. She brought me here.

[She frowns at hearing someone has taken her precious flower. She either doesn't notice, or is ignoring Rapunzel's discomfort, it's far more likely the latter.

She comes close, smiling.]

Oh Rapunzel, don't worry, mother is here. Mother will make everything better.

(Her head droops forward like a wilting flower.)

Were you kidnapped too? (That's even more worrisome.) How will we return?

(Not that she particularly wants to. There are so many amazing things in the world.

Though the nightmarish beings could be here too. She keeps that at the forefront of her mind.)

[She wraps up her flower in her arms, stroking her hair.]

There there, mother is here. Mother knows best. I'm not kidnapped at all. Why, my writer and I have a little arrangement in place. My only concern was finding you and keeping you safe.

(It's enough to make her smile, bright and warm. She nestles into the hug, returning it without hesitation.)

I'm safe, I promise! I just never expected to...come here. (Her curiosity is hard to push down.) Is this what the world is like?

[She runs a knuckle down Rapunzel's cheek.]

Oh Rapunzel, don't be so naive! This is just your writer lulling you into a false sense of security before ruffians and thugs attack! [She suddenly pantomimes claws.]

This place is just as dark and cruel and will tear apart the slightest drop of sunshine.

[She holds Rapunzel's cheeks.]

This place is dangerous, Rapunzel. This is a place of those who would only seek to hurt you, use you!

There isn't an ounce of kindness here, Rapunzel.

(The light in her eyes dims at the explanation and she finds it impossible to tell her that she has seen more of the world than just this. She left the tower of her own choosing.

She can't find the words and perhaps now isn't the time to worry her mother. She'll come back, after all. It's not forever.)

I don't want to be scared...or used... I've been careful. (The old fear of what lurks in the unknown corners of the big world makes her voice shake.) I knew you would find me.

Rapunzel, we met in that tower a long time ago. I know this because I was forgotten about too. Do you know what it's like being cooped up with some of those crazy people inside her head? Let me tell you, it is not my idea of a good time.

(Something about his tone makes her heart ache. Dropping her gaze to her feet, she shifts uncomfortably.)
