There are actually all different types of close-range weapons. If you think "fantasy" then you would get the picture -- swords, axes, polearms, and such. A few people focus on magic or long-range weapons like bows.

Female characters are more common in ALO at least. In GGO, I originally wanted to make a male character just so I wouldn't stand out so much.

I wonder what it's like to be male. Not just for the sake of avoiding certain things, but I've wanted to try it. Kirito-kun told me once that a lot of male players would choose female avatars in older games when it was possible. So the same should be possible for girls.
